Ask HN: What to do when your content and images are used without permission?
A site has translated my blog post into Russian, without contacting me in any way. I found this out when doing a reverse google image search.
They’ve used the third person throughout, adding “Hart said” at the front of paragraphs, but do not add any insight of their own. The rest of the content is copied word-for-word.
When content is translated poorly it makes the original look bad. I also think adding the “Hart said” is a sneaky way of making it appear that they haven’t just ripped my post.
It looks like a few other sites have used the translated Russian copy (not the original).
Translations are basically free publicity and I don’t have a problem with them (the same post is translated into Japanese). However, done without permission it feels wrong.
Would love to get some insight into this. Should I invest my time into protecting my content? Or let things like this slide? Has anyone had a similar thing happen to them?
