Fivethirtyeight.com had a recent article suggesting that religosity was holding back socialism in the US as the two were negatively correlated in surveys, and it was even stronger when you split out those who identified as white vs black, as the effect was only found in the white population.

...so we needed 538 to tell us that the white evangelical movement is strongly opposed to anything that has historically been associated with Communism? Wow. Who the fuck knew. It's almost like American devotion to religion was the explicit response to socialism/communism at the time.
