"A collective name for ancient species that are not human and are typically considered evil by human civilizations of the Seventh Age. They arrived at the dawn of time, under unclear circumstances. Since the Second Age, they have been involved with varying intensity in various wars between species, fought partly against each other and partly against other species. Since the Third Age, their largest groups have been forced underground or underwater. However, their power does not lie in their numbers—the human races and other descendant species far surpass them in this respect—but in their natural magical abilities, their proficiency in ancient magic, and the knowledge and experience gained from their immeasurable age."
