When companies perform large layoffs in California (and some other states), they are required to fill out detailed noticed with the local public officials known as WARN notices. These notices generally include very granular detail reflecting exactly who has been affected by the layoffs, identifying their roles and office locations. However, in our work analyzing these documents, we’ve discovered that some companies’ WARN notices lack these details.
Here is an example of a thorough WARN notice from Meta from Q4 2022:
And here is the WARN notice from Doordash, who laid off 1250 workers on Nov 30, 2022, according to Layoffs.fyi:
This WARN notice provides almost no information, and does not specify an exact number of employees affected. They have not responded to our emails asking for more detailed information.
We are not lawyers, and cannot speculate as to the legality of these WARN notices, but it does appear that these companies are being much less forthright than others regarding this data.
