YouTube Premium is raising prices for the first time since 2023

YouTube Premium subscribers are going to see a higher number on the bill the next time they pay for their monthly subscription.

The streaming giant is raising the prices for its Premium plans, YouTube confirmed to USA TODAY on Friday, April 10. The pricing update is the the first for YouTube Premium plans in the U.S. since 2023, YouTube said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY.

"This change allows us to maintain the features our members value most: ad-free viewing, background play, and a massive library of 300M+ tracks on YouTube Music. We continue to offer several plans, ensuring subscribers can choose the option that works best for them,” the statement added.

YouTube Premium offers ad-free viewing, with additional perks including background listening, offline video downloads and full access to YouTube Music Premium.

How much are YouTube Premium prices increasing?

Here's how much each YouTube Premium plan will now cost:

  • YouTube Premium: $15.99 a month, $2 up from $13.99
  • YouTube Premium Music: $11.99 a month, $1 up from $10.99
  • YouTube Premium Lite: $8.99 a month, $1 up from $7.99

The price of YouTube's family plan, which allows for up to six people in the same household to have access, is also increasing $4 to $26.99 a month.

YouTube Premium's student plan also saw a price increase, jumping $1 to $8.99 a month.

YouTube the latest streamer to increase prices

Netflix increased prices for U.S. subscribers in March, with the ad-supported tier going up $1 to $8.99 per month. The standard, ad-free tier increased by $2 a month, while the premium tier increased by $4 a month to $26.99.

Rates for Spotify Premium also went up in January, as the streamer said "occasional updates to pricing" enable the platform to "continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists." The individual plan went from $11.99 a month to $12.99 a month, while the duo plan increased from $16.99 a month to $18.99 a month. Spotify's family plan went up from $19.99 a month to $21.99 a month.

Disney also raised the prices for Disney+ and Hulu last fall. The price of Disney+ with ads increased from $9.99 a month to $11.99 a month, while Disney+ Premium went from $15.99 a month to $18.99 a month. The price of Hulu with ads went up $2 a month to $11.99.
