Mozilla released Firefox 130, the latest version of its flagship web browser, and the first to support third-party AI chatbots.
“If you want to use AI, we think you should have the freedom to use (or not use) the tools that best suit your needs,” Mozilla’s Ian Carmichael explained back in June. “Instead of juggling between tabs or apps for assistance, those who opt-in will have the option to access their preferred AI service from the Firefox sidebar to summarize information, simplify language, or test their knowledge, all without leaving their current web page.”
This feature is available via a new Firefox Labs entry in Firefox settings. When enabled, you can choose between Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, HuggingChat, and Le Chat Mistral, and then access that Chatbot while browsing via the browser’s sidebar.
The AI Chatbot isn’t the only new experimental feature in Firefox 130. This release also includes optional picture-in-picture auto-open on tab switch and show search results while using IME (Input Method Editor) features too. And outside of Firefox Labs, Firefox 130 also includes the ability to translate portions of a web page after the entire page has been translated. There are also various bug fixes and support for several new languages–Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Indonesian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, and Vietnamese–in Firefox translation.
