The business community in Bengal and across India is in mourning, following the demise of Ratan Tata, the legendary former chairman of the Tata Group.

Tributes poured in from industry leaders and organisations alike, expressing their deep sorrow and admiration for Tata’s legacy.

Amit Saraogi, president of the MCCI, lauded Tata’s transformative leadership, which saw the Tata Group’s revenues soar from USD 4 billion to over USD 100 billion. Saraogi also highlighted Tata’s significant contributions to corporate social responsibility and philanthropy.

A resident of Jamshedpur, Ram Mohan Singh, who retired in September after working in Tata Steel for 42 years, closely remembered Mr. Tata who first visited Jamshedpur in 1963 to look into how Tata Steel works.

An architect by qualification and an aviator by passion, Ratan Tata realised the dream of loss-making Air India flying back to the Tata hangar.

He flew planes and fighter aircraft but his longing for Tatas to pilot Air India again remained a dream till January 2022. For years, many headwinds came the way in the group’s efforts to come back into the aviation space through Air India.

Finally, the aviation efforts took wings, first with AirAsia India and the second with Vistara, a joint venture with Singapore Airlines.

National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah and PDP’s Iltija Mufti condoled the death of Ratan Tata, saying he was a humble man whose contribution can never be forgotten.

“It is shocking. He (Tata) was a humble man.

“He opened his family organisation for everyone. He took his company to the entire world,” Mr. Abdullah told reporters.

The final rites of renowned industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata were performed with full state honours at a central Mumbai crematorium on Thursday evening.

The Mumbai police paid tribute to Tata with a gun salute.

The industry titan’s family members, including the half-brother Noel Tata, and top executives from the Tata Group like chairman N Chandrasekaran, were present at the crematorium in Worli.

U.K. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has paid homage to Ratan Tata as a “titan” of the business world who played a huge role in shaping British industry.

“Sad to hear about the passing of Ratan Tata. He was truly a titan of the business world and someone who played a huge role in shaping British industry,” said Mr. Reynolds.

Ratan Tata was given a ceremonial guard of honour by the Mumbai Police after his mortal remains were brought to a crematorium in Worli for final rites on Thursday evening.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal were present at the crematorium in central Mumbai.

“Have joined millions of Indians to grieve the sad demise of Ratan Tata Ji. Also laid a wreath on behalf of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji,” Mr. Shah said in a post on X.

Ratan Tata’s mortal remains are being taken from Mumbai’s NCPA to Worli for final rites on Thursday (October 10, 2024).

Air India, Air India Express and Vistara are making inflight announcements on Thursday in remembrance of Tata Group patriarch Ratan Tata for whom aviation was especially close to his heart.

Officials on Thursday said the three airlines, part of the Tata Group, will be making announcements in remembrance of Tata in their flights during the day.

The demise of Tata also comes at a time when the conglomerate is in the process of completing the consolidation of its airline business -- the integration of Air India Express and AIX Connect was completed on October 1 while the merger of Vistara with Air India is set for November 12.

Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson told the staff that Air Indians especially acknowledge and are grateful for Tata’s immense contribution to Indian aviation and to the Tata airlines.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Thursday condoled the passing away of industry stalwart Ratan Tata as the “end of an era”.

Jaishankar, in a post on X, said Tata was deeply associated with the modernisation of the Indian industry.

“The passing away of Ratan Tata is the end of an era. He was deeply associated with the modernisation of Indian industry. And even more so with its globalisation,” he said.

Richest Indian Mukesh Ambani paid his last respects to Ratan Tata at the NCPA on Thursday afternoon, along with his family members.

Accompanied by wife Nita, son Aakash and daughter-in-law Shloka, Ambani came to pay homage where the mortal remains were kept for the public.

The Ambanis paid floral tributes to the mortal remains of Ratan Tata. Later, he was seen having a word with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal at the National Centre for the Performing Arts.

Mr. Ambani had also visited the Breach Candy Hospital immediately after the death of Ratan Tata late last night.

Paying homage to industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, Ajit Paygude, the general secretary of Tata Motors Union said there can be no one like him. Reminiscing about Ratan Tata’s visits to the plant, Mr. Paygude said he respected the workers’ unions and would meet with them every time.

On behalf of the Singapore Airlines Board and Management, Singapore CEO Goh Choon Phong expressed their condolences on the passing of Mr. Ratan Tata. 

“Mr. Tata was a visionary global business leader, as well as a cherished partner and dear friend. He played a pivotal role in setting up our Vistara joint venture over a decade ago, laying the foundation for a strong and enduring relationship between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. Vistara quickly established itself as India’s most-loved full-service airline.” he said in a statement. 

“I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Tata personally and catching up with him during my many visits to India. His wisdom, integrity, warmth, and compassion left an indelible impression on me and all those who had the honour of meeting him,” he added. 

Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines are collaborating on the Vistara and Air India merger, “inspired by Mr. Tata’s legacy and vision”. “His vision and values will no doubt continue to guide our path forward,” he said. 

The CEO expressed their thoughts are with the Tata family and the entire Tata Group during this challenging time.

The story of two iconic brands Jaguar and Land Rover entering the Tata stable began with an insult Ratan Tata couldn’t bear.

Back in 1998, the legendary industrialist launched his dream project, Tata Indica — India’s first hatchback with a diesel engine. But sales initially were slow and Tata Motors decided to sell off its fledgling car business within a year of its debut.

During the meeting at the Tata headquarters, the American company evinced interest in buying out the business. To take the deal forward, Ratan Tata and his team flew to Detroit to meet Bill Ford, then the chairman of Ford. The meeting lasted about three hours but did not go well.

Ratan Tata’s death has shifted attention to probable contenders for the position of chairman of Tata Trusts. One among them is Noel Tata, son of Naval H. Tata and Simone N. Tata, and half-brother to Ratan Tata.

Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das paid last respect to industrialist Ratan Tata in Mumbai on Thursday, hailing him as a true visionary and a champion of ethical corporate governance.

“There are two things that stand out about Ratan Tata. First, he was a true visionary. Second, he was a strong believer in ethics in corporate governance. I think whenever the economic history of modern India is written, I would feel that a full volume will not be enough to describe his achievements...A great son of India and a phenomenal person. May his soul rest in peace,” the RBI Governor told ANI.

Pop star and actor Diljit Dosanjh paid tribute to Ratan Tata at his concert gig in Dusseldorf, Germany. Diljit, who is currently on the European leg of his ‘Dil-Luminati Tour’, condoled the demise of the late industrialist and TATA Group scion on stage, saying in Punjabi, “Ratan Tara ji has passed away. It was important to mention his name here because his life was all about hard work. I never read or heard anywhere that he spoke ill of anyone.”

Veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani on Thursday said among the Indian business houses, he has admired Tatas the most due to the immense dedication, vision and integrity with which Ratan Tata steered the group to glory for many decades.

In his condolence message, the former deputy prime minister said Tata left an indelible mark on the Indian industry. He was one of the giants of the industry, Mr. Advani added.

“He indeed proved to be a worthy successor of the very inspiring late Shri J.R.D. Tata, with whom I had the opportunity to interact with on numerous occasions,” Mr. Advani said.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wrote to Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran, stating that he had fond memories of working closely with Ratan Tata: 

“Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Ratan Tata ji, a stalwart of Indian Industry. He was much more than a business icon, his vision and humanity demonstrated in the work of several charities founded and nurtured during his life. Amid the news of the demise of veteran Ratan Tata, Bharti Enterprises founder and chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal says, “I’m deeply saddened,”. 

Mr. Mittal says, “He leaves behind an astronomical imprint on the Indian industry, philanthropy, and the perennial zest to better the world we live in.” 

The statement further adds, “A true nation builder, his legacy in the growth of the country will forever inspire entrepreneurs and all Indians alike.”

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai says, Mr. Tata was not only successful in carrying forward the legacy of the Tata Group in the business sector, but also emerged as a great philanthropist, like his forefathers. “Beyond business, he focused on national interest and social welfare. His death is a great loss to the nation,” Mr. Selvaperunthagai adds.

Losing “dear friend” Tata Sons Chairman Emeritus Ratan Tata is “very painful”, says IT industry veteran and Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy as he acknowledged that he was a role model for him in value-based leadership. 

“He (Tata) was indeed a moral compass for me whenever I had some ambiguity and confusion in ethical issues,” Mr. Murthy says.

After conferring an honour on Tata in 2020, the software icon bent down to touch his feet and sought his blessings.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat condoles the death of Ratan Tata, saying he remained inspirational with his unique thinking and work.

“Even after touching many heights, his style of simplicity and humility will remain exemplary,” Mr. Bhagwat said in a post on X.

The Tatas’ association with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) is well known as Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, along with the then maharaja of Mysuru, helped establish the institute in the early 1900s. The Tata legacy continued in the years to come. Ratan Tata, as chairman of Tata Sons, was also president of the IISc Court, the highest decision-making body of the institute.

According to the Tata Group, Mr. Tata helped promote the Sir Dorabji Tata Centre for Tropical Diseases and assisted with the maintenance of the structure. He had helped set up the digital library in the 1990s. He took part in the centenary celebrations of the institute in 2009.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the demise of Ratan Tata, recalling his support for the development of the State.

In a post on X, Mr. Vijayan says, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ratan Tata, an industrialist with a lasting legacy in Indian history. His unwavering support for Kerala’s development will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the Tata Group.”

Bombay House is different from any other conglomerate’s headquarters. While every visitor is frisked at the entrance of the colonial-era building, one should not be surprised to see a street dog stroll in nonchalantly.

For decades, specific instructions have been issued to the staff to allow free entry and exit for the strays who may want to come in.

All of it is courtesy the love and concern for the canines of one man, Ratan Tata, who held office as the chairman of Tata Sons between 1991 and 2012 and came back later for a short stint.

Telangana government to consider the possibility of naming the Outer Ring Road (ORR) approach road to Adibatla after veteran industrialist Ratan Tata. 

The State IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu in a tweet writes, “He was very impressed with the ORR and while driving on it by had commented that he could land an aircraft on it. We consider it a fitting tribute to his memory to look at the possibility of naming the approach road from ORR to Adibhatla after him as Ratan Tata Marg.”

Shantanu Naidu, the founder of Goodfellows, a startup that aims to provide companionship to senior citizens, is a big believer in how much generations can learn from each other. “My relationship with Mr. Tata gave me an insight into how rich inter generational relationship is,” says 30-year-old Naidu, who works as a general manager in the office of Ratan Naval Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the State lost one of its biggest well-wishers in the death of industrialist Ratan Tata.

“Tata, a recipient of Assam’s highest civilian award, ‘Asom Baibhav’, occupied a special place in the hearts and minds of the people of the State,” he said.

“Tata also played an instrumental role in setting up the semiconductor facility in Jagiroad and creating employment opportunities for the State’s youth,” the CM said.

Amid the news of the demise of veteran Industrialist Ratan. N. Tata, SBI chairman says, “Ratan N. Tata was a visionary leader whose contributions shaped India’s industrial and philanthropic landscape.” 

Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, SBI Chairman in a statement writes, “His leadership at Tata Sons redefined corporate responsibility and innovation, positioning the Tata Group as a global force while remaining rooted in ethics. SBI shared a deep relationship with Shri Tata, whose support for the banking sector and financial inclusion greatly influenced our initiatives.” 

The statement adds, “His partnership helped drive economic growth and community development. As we mourn his loss, we honor his legacy and the values he championed that significantly contributed to building India.”

Preparations are underway at NCPA, Nariman Point as the mortal remains of Ratan Tata are to be brought here for the public to pay their last respects before the last rites.

PETA in a statement says, “PETA India is deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ratan Tata. Ratan ji’s love for animals and compassion was as famous as his business prowess and will always be remembered. His influence on the community, inspiring many to care for community dogs, and to open their hearts and homes to them, is a testament to his enduring legacy” 

The statement says, “The Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai, a result of his compassion, is already helping countless animals in need, and is sure to become an ally for PETA India’s own emergency response work.” 

“Ratan ji’s love for animals also inspired other changes. In 2022, PETA India issued a Cow-Friendly Future Award to Tata Motors for using modern vegan interiors in its AVINYA Concept car, a move that we knew would set a precedent for other car companies to follow as well as protect animals and the environment.” adds the statement. 

Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan expresses deep grief over the demise of the Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group Shri Ratan Tata. 

In a condolence message, the Governor says, “Shri Ratan Tata was one of the brightest jewels of the global Tata empire founded by the late Jamshedji Tata 150 years ago”.

He says, “Adopting modern management practices, Ratan Tata established the Tata Group as a trusted Indian global brand, without ever compromising with the vision of the founding fathers.” 

He adds, “The Tata Group has touched the lives of each one of the 1.4 billion people of India through its products and services; the credit of which goes as much to the vision of Ratan Tata as to the Tata group.” 

According to a statement, “The mortal remains of Mr Ratan N Tata will be taken to the NCPA Lawns, Nariman Point, Mumbai at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, 10th October 2024, for members of the public to pay their last respects and homage to the departed soul.” 

At 4:00 p.m., the mortal remains will embark on its final journey to the Prayer Hall at the Worli Crematorium, Dr. E. Moses Road, Worli.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday mourned the death of industrialist Ratan Tata, terming it an irreparable loss for Indian business and society.

Stating that she was saddened by the demise of Tata, Banerjee said the former Tata Group chairman had been a foremost leader of Indian industry and a public-spirited philanthropist.

“His demise will be an irreparable loss for Indian business world and society,” she added in the post on X.

Chief ministers of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha on Wednesday evening condoled the demise of Tata Group’s chairman emeritus and veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, and said his legacy will live on forever.

The 86-year-old Padma Vibhushan breathed his last at south Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital at 11.30 pm, a top police officer told PTI. He was admitted to the hospital for the past few days.

“Saddened by the demise of Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Sons. The former Chairman of Tata Group had been a foremost leader of Indian industries and a public-spirited philanthropist. His demise will be an irreparable loss for Indian business world and society. My condolences to all his family members and colleagues,” Banerjee wrote on X.

With the passing away of Ratan Tata, not just India but humanity has lost a compassionate leader and such fine souls are rare, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said on Thursday.

“With the passing away of Ratan Tata sir, not just India, but humanity has lost a compassionate leader. (He was) A business tycoon who also excelled at philanthropy,” Thackeray said.

“I will always remember him, not just for his commitment to business and philanthropy, or only for his compassion for animals, but also his humility that I witnessed every time I met him. Such fine souls are rare. May god give peace to his soul,” Thackeray said in a post on X.

Ratan Tata’s death was a loss for the country and Maharashtra, deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said late Wednesday night while describing the veteran industrialist as the epitome of generosity, humanity and faith.

Tata, 86, died at a hospital here earlier in the night.

In a statement, Fadnavis said Tata was known to the world as a successful industrialist, but he was also an icon whose contribution transcended to several social areas.

His work in the areas of education, rural development, malnourishment and health was remarkable, the BJP leader said.

India’s top tycoons on Wednesday mourned the death of legendary industrialist Ratan Tata, with RIL Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani calling him one of India’s most illustrious and kind-hearted sons.

Tata Group’s chairman emeritus and veteran industrialist Ratan Tata died at a Mumbai hospital late on Wednesday night. Tata, who led the salt-to-software conglomerate to new heights, was 86.

Besides Ambani, billionaire Gautam Adani as well as auto legend Anand Mahindra mourned Tata’s demise.

Anand Mahindra said India’s economy stands on the cusp of a historic leap forward and Tata’s “life and work have had much to do with our being in this position”.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday condoled the death of industrialist Ratan Tata, saying the country has lost an ideal and accomplished son.

Tata, 86, breathed his last at Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital on late Wednesday night.

He knew Tata for over three decades and learnt a lot from him, said the Union road transport minister.

“I am stunned after hearing the news of the death of a great son of India,” the senior BJP leader wrote on Facebook.

President of India Droupadi Murmu conveyed condolences on Tata Group’s former Chairman Ratan Tata’s death. “In the sad demise of Shri Ratan Tata, India has lost an icon who blended corporate growth with nation building, and excellence with ethics. A recipient of Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, he took forward the great Tata legacy and gave it a more impressive global presence,” she said on X. 

“He inspired seasoned professionals and young students alike. His contribution to philanthropy and charity is invaluable,” Ms. Murmu added.

Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Kamal Nath said that Ratan Tata made an incomparable contribution to nation building with his industrial expertise. 

“I express my deepest condolences on the demise of the country’s renowned industrialist and social worker, Padma Vibhushan Shri Ratan Tata. With his industrial expertise, he made an incomparable contribution to nation building. With his demise, the country has lost a committed industrial leader,” he wrote in an X post.

Mr. Nath added, “May God give place to his soul in his lotus feet and give strength to his family to bear this sorrow. Om Shanti.”

The Congress on Wednesday condoled the passing away of Ratan Tata, with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi saying he was a man with a vision “who has left a lasting mark on both business and philanthropy”.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed sadness over Tata’s death, saying that in his passing away “we have lost an invaluable son of India”.

The Congress hailed Tata as a titan of Indian industry and a philanthropist who shaped India’s corporate landscape.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav took to social media platform X to express his condolences on the death of industrialist and former Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata’s passing away. 

“The demise of the country’s renowned industrialist and Honorary Chairman of Tata Sons, Shri Ratan Tata Ji is an irreparable loss not only for the industrial world but for all Indians,” he said. 

Mr. Yadav added, “Today the country has lost not only a great industrialist but also a very sensitive person who was always dedicated towards national service and humanity. His departure will always leave a void not only in India but also in the world industry. His contribution to the development of the country will remain unforgettable.”

“I pray to Baba Mahakal to give a place to the departed soul in his abode and also give strength to every grieving person to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti! #RatanTata,” he wrote.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid rich tributes to Ratan Tata, the noted industrialist who passed away at a Mumbai hospital, describing him as a visionary business leader, compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being.

“One of the most unique aspects of Shri Ratan Tata Ji was his passion towards dreaming big and giving back. He was at the forefront of championing causes like education, healthcare, sanitation, animal welfare to name a few,” he said on X.

Modi said Tata provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses, Tata Group, and at the same time his contribution went far beyond the boardroom.

He endeared himself to several people thanks to his humility, kindness and an unwavering commitment to making our society better, the prime minister added.

Veteran industrialist Ratan Tata died at a Mumbai hospital late on Wednesday (October 9, 2024), a top police official told PTI.

The chairman emeritus of the Tata group was 86.

Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran, in a statement, confirmed the death of Tata, and described him as his “friend, mentor and guide”.
