Scientists Have a Fascinating Hypothesis About Why Smart People Should Spend Less Time With Friends

Higher intelligence links to lower life satisfaction when people socialize more often with friends. Researchers found this pattern in data from more than 15,000 young adults. The same data show denser living environments reduce life satisfaction more strongly among people with lower intelligence scores.

The findings stem from the savanna theory of happiness. The theory states that life satisfaction responds to a situation’s current effects and to what those effects would have meant in the ancestral environment. That environment was the African savanna during the Pleistocene. General intelligence evolved partly to solve novel problems. Therefore intelligence should moderate how ancestral factors shape modern happiness. Frequent contact with friends aided survival in small hunter-gatherer bands. High population density did not. More intelligent people should feel less bound by these ancestral patterns.

Earlier studies in evolutionary psychology and positive psychology linked social contact and residential density to well-being. More frequent interaction with friends raised average life satisfaction. Urban density tended to lower it. Separate research on the Savanna Principle and the Savanna-IQ Interaction Hypothesis suggested intelligence changes responses to novel conditions. No prior large national study had tested the specific interactions of intelligence with friendship frequency and with population density together.

Researchers analyzed Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. The survey is nationally representative of the United States. The analytic sample held about 15,197 respondents aged 18 to 28. Life satisfaction came from a single self-report item. Intelligence scores came from an abbreviated Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test given earlier in the study. Researchers converted those scores to IQ-equivalent units. Respondents reported how often they spent time with or talked to close friends. County-level population density measured residential crowding. Ordinary least-squares regression models predicted life satisfaction. The models included the main effects of socialization frequency, population density, and intelligence. They also included the two key interaction terms. Controls covered sex, age, education, marital status, and other covariates.

Socialization frequency showed a positive main link to life satisfaction across the full sample. The interaction with intelligence was significant and negative. Among respondents about one standard deviation below the mean IQ (roughly 81), more frequent socialization predicted higher life satisfaction. Among those about one standard deviation above the mean (roughly 116), the link reversed. More frequent socialization predicted slightly lower life satisfaction. Intelligence itself correlated positively with how often people socialized with friends. Yet the well-being return from that socializing declined and then reversed at higher intelligence levels.

Population density showed a negative main link to life satisfaction. The interaction with intelligence was again significant. The adverse effect of higher density was more than twice as large among lower-intelligence respondents as among higher-intelligence respondents. Higher-intelligence individuals still reported lower satisfaction in denser counties. The slope was markedly shallower.

Several limits constrain interpretation occurs. The design is cross-sectional and observational. Causal direction cannot be established. Life satisfaction rests on a single self-report item. The sample covers only young adults in the early 2000s United States. Generalization to other ages or societies remains untested. Intelligence is measured by a vocabulary-based proxy rather than a full battery. Residual confounding by personality, health, or unmeasured environmental factors remains possible. The authors note these constraints. They treat the results as evidence consistent with the theory rather than definitive proof.
