“Finding the right ways to protect both privacy and safety is something societies have historically grappled with,” he wrote. “There are still many open questions here and we’ll consult with safety experts, law enforcement and governments on the best ways to implement safety measures.”

Facebook will also hold onto messages for a shorter period of time, thereby reducing the personal information the company retains on its users, Zuckerberg wrote. Critics have argued the company collects data for one purpose but keeps it for undisclosed uses in the future.

“People want to know that what they share won’t come back to hurt them later, and reducing the length of time their information is stored and accessible will help,” he wrote.
