Shadcn became the top #1 UI library. Here’s why

Shadcn broke through 100k GitHub stars last November. It took it 2.5 years to surpass other popular UI libraries. Now, Shadcn is baked into AI agents default stack. Yet, most developers still haven't used it.
Shadcn is unlike any UI library before it, and it quietly raised the bar for what frontend quality should look like.
Different kind of UI library

At first glance, Shadcn looks like a regular UI library (think MaterialUI, Chakra or Mantine). It looks like a list of components that you can preview and click through (e.g. Accordion, Dialog, Sidebar, Dropdown Menu).
But Shadcn is very different in the way you install components.
Instead of installing a whole package with npm, you install each component individually with `npx`. The code lands right in your repo, so you fully own it and can customise it however you want. It's like asking a frontend developer to build quality components for you, and they magically appear in your codebase.
Under the hood, Shadcn is built on top of two libraries:
- BaseUI : the core — unstyled components, perfectly polished for accessibility, animations, and delight
- Tailwind CSS : styling with utility classes instead of css-in-js or separate css files. Makes components easily cloneable and standardised
Shadcn is also often paired with motion for smooth animations.
The way Shadcn components are installed gives you endless extensibility, as you own the code and can change it however you want, just like you wrote all components yourself. It also gives a system for third-party developers to distribute (and sell) their own components and templates.
UI libraries are notoriously famous for their tough customisation. You need to rewrite CSS styles if you don't like the styling and it's never easy to do. You end up fighting with a library if you customise "too much". And you barely can extend a component with a new functionality as code is stored inside the npm package. Shadcn eliminates these issues.
Best fit for AI

Shadcn was released in 2023 and almost right away it was sponsored by Vercel. Since that moment Vercel was adopting the library in their products and was popularising it around. Early adopters loved it. Dozens of new projects and component collections appeared around Shadcn.
AI companies started training on top of a huge amount of Shadcn content, and eventually AI tools started using Shadcn as default UI library, which skyrocketed its growth and adoption further.
Now Shadcn is one of the default tools in Claude Code stack, it's used in Lovable, v0 and many more new AI tools. Recently Shadcn released v4 along with AI Skills which helps AI agents to write perfect Shadcn apps [see evals ].
Global design system
Shadcn turned out to be more than a UI library. It solved an eternal complicated question of how to build and maintain design systems, both in design files and code. Each project used to use a different UI library and styling approach, teams rebuilt the same type of components over and over, very few teams had time and experience to polish all those components.
Shadcn became a standard, the foundation for hundreds of libraries (aka registries). These projects share component philosophy and underlying libraries, but introduce their own unique components. So from the developer perspective components from different libraries are similar, but their UI and logic is authentic and unique.
Now you can compose your marketing pages and applications with high-quality components from different component collections, while customising them for your brand and style. Or better, you can point your AI agents to your favourite registries so AI researches best components for you and stitches them together.
Here are just a few Shadcn libraries:
- Marketing blocks: 21st dev , react bits , magicui , Shadcnstudio
- App components: kiboui , reui , aceternity , promptkit , fluidfunctionalism , lucide-animated
- Theming Shadcn: Shadcn/create , tweakcn, Shadcndesign
- Shadcn ports for other frameworks: Vue , Svelte , React-Native
Open a library website, browse through components, install components you love, and boom — you've built a top-notch, polished frontend. Now you can focus on your product logic and growth instead of writing same UI components over and over.
Shadcn-ification: the future of Shadcn
As with every major UI library, when everyone starts using the same components, different apps start kinda look the same and lose a bit of their personality. Most notably it happened with Twitter Bootstrap, which was a standard library for the majority of websites 10 years ago.
AI rapidly changes startup industry, yet personal touch, brand and taste become more and more important to make a product feel authentic and pleasant to use. People get tired from same UIs, even if it's a perfect UI.
The few recent Shadcn releases were focused on extended theming customisability so I believe it will be the focus for the library going forward, so it'll be easy to deviate from standard UI patterns while keeping code maintainable and nice.
Shadcn component distribution is a great philosophy and it's here to stay, so it's well worth for your company to adopt and switch to it.
