Who a foldable phone is for
With smaller exterior displays and larger interior screens, foldable phones allow you to do more than you can with standard smartphones.
Foldables come in two styles: phablet and clamshell. Phablets, or phone-tablet hybrids, look like standard touchscreen phones on the front and open horizontally like a book. Once open, they mimic a tablet, creating a better viewing experience for multitasking, streaming content, or reading an ebook.
Clamshell models have smaller displays on the outside and open vertically — like old-school flip phones do — to reveal larger screens inside. They’re the better option for people who want a more compact device that doesn’t sacrifice screen real estate. And the small outer screen acts as a viewfinder, which makes shooting photos and videos a lot more convenient.
Regardless of the style you choose, it’s important to take price into account. Although foldable phones now offer more durability and support more practical uses in the real world, they’re still quite expensive compared with standard smartphones. Depending on the carrier, you can take advantage of trade-ins and special offers; if your older device is eligible for trade-in, you can apply the value to a foldable. Note, though, that repair costs aren’t cheap. I recommend looking into buying additional insurance from the phone manufacturer, just in case.
Why you should trust us
I’m a writer at Wirecutter who has been testing and reviewing smartphones of all kinds for almost a decade, previously for outlets such as Digital Trends, Mashable, PCMag, and Wired. My experience includes covering foldable phones. I tested the first-generation Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr back in 2020, and I’ve been following the trajectory and evolution of foldables from companies such as Google, Samsung, and Motorola ever since.
For this guide:
- I used each new foldable phone as my primary smartphone for weeks at a time. This process allowed me to test the hardware and mechanics daily, to evaluate the app optimization and continuity between the external and internal screens, and to assess the battery life.
- I compared these foldables against previous-generation versions, noting advancements in hardware, software, and performance.
- I researched how Google, Samsung, and Motorola have improved foldable phones’ intricate components, such as the hinge and flexible displays, along with their durability as it relates to increased IP ratings.
- Like all Wirecutter journalists, I review and test products with complete editorial independence. I’m never made aware of any business implications of my editorial recommendations. Read more about our editorial standards.
How I picked and tested
Here are the criteria I used to decide which foldable phones are worth buying:
- Durability: Android foldables are expensive, and you shouldn’t invest in a device with substandard build quality. Foldables should be constructed of high-quality materials such as Gorilla Glass, titanium, aluminum, and ceramic coatings for durability. The hinge mechanism and display should be able to withstand years of wear and tear, and the phone should have an Ingress Protection rating of IP48 or above.
- Display: Foldable phones have an exterior display and an interior display, both of which should provide an enjoyable viewing experience, considering you’ll be staring at both screens for several hours throughout the day. Both displays should deliver sharp quality that is pleasing to the eye and bright enough to see outdoors. High refresh rates are important for smooth scrolling, as well. I also factor in the visibility of a foldable’s crease; it shouldn’t be so prominent that it disrupts the experience. While you can still see and feel the crease on the foldables I recommend, it’s less of a distraction than it has been historically.
- Software: A foldable phone is only as good as its software. If a foldable’s Android operating system isn’t optimized to run smoothly on both the exterior and interior displays, that defeats the purpose of using a foldable, so I recommend foldable phones that can properly run apps and features on each display. A wide ecosystem of apps should be available. Security is important, too, considering that your phone contains a lot of personal data. It shouldn’t ship with outdated software, and it should receive security patches for at least four years.
- Performance: Like any smartphone, a foldable phone should operate smoothly. Most foldables run on the same processors that power the latest flagship Android smartphones.
- Camera: The camera sensors on foldable phones aren’t quite as advanced as those of a standard smartphone, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be capable of taking great photos. The best foldable phones have advanced image-processing capabilities and are capable of shooting in various lighting conditions, and they produce shots that capture plenty of detail and deliver color accuracy.
- Battery life: In the past, foldables have been heavily criticized for underwhelming battery life, but things are improving on that front. While the restrictions of hinge mechanisms have forced phone manufacturers to compromise on foldables’ battery size, I recommend only foldables that can survive at least a full day of heavy usage.
The best foldable: Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold

Top pick
Google’s phablet-style foldable offers the highest durability rating of any foldable, plus bright displays, long battery life, and excellent cameras. It also comes with the same AI features included in the standard Pixel 10 lineup.
The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the best foldable phone if you want a more affordable option that lets you easily switch between a traditional smartphone and tablet mode. Compared with other foldables, it offers more durability, a camera system with better image processing, and more practical AI features.

It’s the most durable foldable phone I’ve tested. It has an IP68 rating, which indicates full dust protection and water resistance, matching current standard flagship phones in that regard. Google also includes a gearless hinge that the company says is twice as durable as the hinge on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold; it’s coupled with a redesigned main display, which has two layers of film for added drop protection. The company claims that these upgrades guarantee that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold can withstand over a decade’s worth of folding.
While that doesn’t mean you should be careless with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, it isn’t as vulnerable to damage as previous models. In my testing, it survived both a coffee spill and an accidental drop from a desk.

The cover screen and the interior display are bright and perfect for scrolling. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 6.4-inch cover screen that offers plenty of space for comfortable scrolling. The cover screen is also brighter, capable of reaching 3,000 nits of peak brightness (up from 2,700 nits on the previous model), which makes viewing content on your phone in direct sunlight a lot easier.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold opens up to an 8-inch main screen. It’s just as bright as the cover display, and scrolling is just as smooth. I relied on the main display for watching YouTube videos, reading ebooks, shopping online, and taking video calls.
Its battery life is surprisingly lengthy. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold comes with a large, 5,015 mAh battery, which is bigger than the 4,650 mAh battery on its predecessor. I consistently hit almost 24 hours on a charge before having to plug it in again.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold charges quickly, too. Google claims the device can charge up to 50% in about 30 minutes on a charging brick capable of 30 W or more. I used it with the company’s 67 W Pixel Flex Dual Port charging brick (sold separately) and found that it took 35 minutes to charge from 0% to 50%.

It offers snappy performance. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is powered by Google’s latest processor, the Tensor G5, and 16 GB of RAM. In my tests, it delivered smooth performance, whether I was scrolling through TikTok and Instagram or using any of the built-in AI features. The base-model Pixel 10 Pro Fold starts at 256 GB, but you now have the option of up to 1 TB of storage.
It comes with the same AI features as the rest of the Pixel 10 models. The Pro Fold’s Tensor G5 chip enables the same AI features introduced on the standard Pixel 10 lineup, many of which are actually useful day-to-day. One feature edits your photos using your prompts; another coaches you to take better photos.
It also supports Magic Cue, a feature that uses AI to surface contextual suggestions based on the task. The feature proved useful in my testing — for example, when a friend texted me asking for someone’s phone number, the number surfaced above the keyboard.

The triple-lens camera system takes excellent photos. On the back of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold are a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 10.5-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 10.8-megapixel 5x telephoto lens. Both the cover display and the main display come equipped with 10-megapixel front-facing cameras. In my tests, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold delivered high-quality photos with accurate color balance, vibrant saturation, and crisp details.
It’s comfortable to hold. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is thicker than some other foldables, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7, but it’s a lot easier to hold one-handed. And although the camera bump is also a bit thick, it didn’t cause the phone to rock back and forth as much as the corresponding bump on the Galaxy Z Fold7 while I was using the device unfolded on a surface.
It will get updates until 2032. Matching the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will receive security upgrades, new Pixel features, and Android updates for the next six years.
Google’s Pixelsnap makes attaching accessories easy. Google introduced its Pixelsnap wireless-charging technology, which allows you to attach accessories magnetically to the back of a device, with the Pixel 10 lineup. I appreciate that Google added it to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, as well. It was nice to be able to keep the phone attached to my car mount while driving and to use it with a PopSocket, which made the device a lot more comfortable to hold unfolded. You can use Pixelsnap with Google’s own accessories, and you can also use it with third-party accessories, including those that are compatible with Apple’s MagSafe.
It’s always on sale, making it much more affordable than our upgrade pick. Google released the Pixel 10 Pro Fold in 2025 with a starting price of $1,800. Since then the price has been reduced to $1,500, which makes it $400 less than the Motorola Razr Fold.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
It’s missing the Pixel 10 Pro’s best camera feature. Both the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL come with Pro Res Zoom, a generative-AI feature that allows you to take photos at up to 100x zoom without losing detail. The Pro Fold is more expensive than the Pixel 10 Pro, so I wish it had this feature.
The matte back scratches easily. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks as high-end as the standard Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, with a glass back and matte coating, along with a matte aluminum frame. But I found that it scratches easily, and the scratches are a lot more noticeable on the green color option. If you don’t want to put a case on it, I suggest going with the darker gray color so that scratches don’t stand out as much.
The best clamshell foldable: Motorola Razr Ultra (2026)

The Motorola Razr Ultra (2026) has everything you’re likely to look for in a clamshell-style foldable, including snappy performance, great cameras, a long-lasting battery, a useful cover display, and a durable build.
It’s $200 more than last year’s model, but it offers a few improvements, namely an upgraded camera sensor that delivers higher-quality photos than its predecessor, a bigger battery that will last throughout the day and then some, and an additional year of security updates.
It’s durable, compact, and fun to use. The new Razr Ultra matches last year’s model in durability, with an IP48 dust- and water-resistance rating and a titanium hinge.

The clamshell design also makes it fun to shoot content hands-free, as you can prop the phone up in various ways to take selfies and group shots using air and motion gestures. For example, when you’re holding the phone, you can twist your wrist twice to launch the camera app; when you’re taking a photo, you can hold your palm up to trigger a countdown before snapping a picture. And because the phone is compact and small, it’s easy to slide into your pocket or to fit into a small bag.
You can easily use apps on the cover screen. Outside, the Razr Ultra has a vivid 4-inch OLED display that can reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness. The cover display has native support for all third-party apps, allowing you to access all the same apps you typically would use on the main display. I scrolled through Instagram and TikTok, answered text messages, and followed turn-by-turn instructions on Google Maps, all on the external display.

It has longer battery life than its predecessor. The latest Razr Ultra has a 5,000 mAh battery, which is bigger than the 4,700 mAh battery in the 2025 model. After a full day of use, I found that its battery still had about 30% left; the battery didn’t die until 11 a.m. the following morning, for a total of about 26 hours on a single charge. Like last year’s model, the Razr Ultra supports 30 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging.

The upgraded cameras take great photos in all conditions. Like the 2025 Razr Ultra, the latest version comes with a 50-megapixel main lens and a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens (the same setup you’ll find on the entry-level Razr). It also has a 50-megapixel internal camera with improved scene detection and AI enhancements for better framing and lighting.
Compared with its predecessor, the latest Razr Ultra delivered images with better contrast, more natural highlights, and richer depth. The improvements are more apparent in low light.

The processor provides snappy performance. The new Razr Ultra has the same processor, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, as last year’s model, coupling that with 16 GB of RAM; the phone ships with Android 16. Throughout my testing, the Razr Ultra performed smoothly, whether I was switching between apps on the main and cover screens or multitasking.
Flaws but not dealbreakers

It’s expensive. With a starting price of $1,500, the Razr Ultra (2026) is $200 more than last year’s version, which makes it the most expensive clamshell foldable I’ve tested.
It gives you only one storage option. Motorola dropped the 1 TB model, so the Razr Ultra (2026) is available only with 512 GB of storage. Meanwhile, the standard Razr (2026) costs $800 for 256 GB of storage, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 starts at $1,100 for 256 GB and costs $1,220 for 512 GB.
Motorola’s AI features remain hit-or-miss. Like last year’s version, the Razr Ultra (2026) comes with Motorola’s suite of generative-AI features, but most of them seemed impractical in testing. Playlist Studio, which curates a personalized playlist based on prompts, works only with Amazon Music (I use Spotify). Image Studio, which uses AI to generate custom images and stickers based on prompts, is gimmicky — I would’ve preferred the ability to use AI to edit my photos instead. Google’s AI features for Pixel phones are significantly better.
Motorola offers fewer years of software support than the competition. Motorola expanded security support for all three Razr phones to five years (up from four on previous versions), though the Razr Ultra (2026) will get only three years of OS upgrades. While that is an improvement, that still isn’t as long as the seven years of software and security updates that Google and Samsung offer, or the seven years that Motorola provides for its pricier Razr Fold.
The best foldable for less than $1,000: Motorola Razr (2026)

Budget pick
For $800, Motorola’s standard Razr offers all the essentials, including a solid camera system, great battery life, and a cover display that lets you interact with all the apps you need.
The Motorola Razr (2026) doesn’t offer many upgrades over its predecessor, but it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a more affordable alternative to the Razr Ultra (2026). For less than $1,000, it offers the same stylish aesthetic and durability as the higher-end model, along with all-day battery life, a solid camera system with an improved ultrawide-angle sensor, and software that’s optimized for its small cover screen.
It’s as sleek and durable as the more expensive Razr Ultra. This $800 phone still feels high-end — if not for the difference in display sizes, it would be tough to tell the base Razr apart from the $1,500 Razr Ultra based on design and feel alone. It’s also as durable as the more expensive model, with an IP48 dust- and water-resistance rating and a titanium-reinforced hinge.

Both the interior and external displays are big and bright. Third-party apps work well on the cover screen, too. Rather than flipping the Razr open every time I wanted to interact with an app, I could answer text messages, scroll through Instagram, check emails, and control my Spotify playlists right on the exterior display.

It has an upgraded processor that delivers solid performance. The Razr is powered by a new MediaTek 7450X processor and runs Android 16. Performance was smooth all around in my tests, whether I was multitasking between apps, scrolling through content, or playing a few rounds of Alto’s Odyssey. It isn’t as powerful as the Razr Ultra, but it costs a lot less.

It offers all-day battery life. The Razr comes with a slightly larger battery in comparison with last year’s model (4,800 mAh versus 4,500 mAh). In my tests, after a day of use, it had about 8% of its battery left, running for a total of 14 hours. That doesn’t come close to the 36 hours of battery life that Motorola claims, but it should still get you through a full day. Like last year’s model, the 2026 Razr supports 30 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging.

It has a solid camera system with an improved ultrawide-angle lens. While the Razr comes with the same 50-megapixel main sensor as its predecessors, Motorola updated the ultrawide-angle lens from 13 megapixels to 50 megapixels. As with last year’s Razr, in this model the main sensor produces vibrant, punchy contrast and preserves a lot of detail. It does a solid job in low light, but it relies heavily on image processing; images appear bright rather than blurry or grainy, though most photos tend to look overexposed and oversharpened.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
It’s more expensive than previous models. The Razr comes in only one storage configuration, 256 GB for $800, which is $100 more than last year’s model. Though it’s one of the few foldable phones under $1,000, this year’s Razr doesn’t offer many new upgrades to justify that price increase.

Motorola continues to offer fewer years of software support than the competition. Like the Razr Ultra, the latest base-model Razr will get only three years of software support and five years of security updates. This means it will receive Android OS updates until 2029 and security updates until 2031. Though Motorola expanded the security-update period by an extra year, it’s still shorter than the seven years of security and software updates on Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Other foldable phones worth considering
If you prefer a thinner, lighter phablet-style foldable: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 was previously our top pick. It remains a great phone, with top-of-the-line specs including an excellent 200-megapixel camera and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. It has a big, bright 6.5-inch cover display and 8-inch main display, both of which support a 120 Hz refresh rate. It runs Android 16 and supports useful AI features. It’s also impressively thin and lightweight. The battery life isn’t great at 13 hours, and it’s expensive at $2,000, so I recommend our current picks over this model unless you’re all in with Samsung. But it’s still a solid option if you simply want a slimmer foldable and don’t mind sacrificing battery life.
What to look forward to
At its second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year, Samsung announced three new foldable phones: the $2,100 Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the $1,900 Galaxy Z Fold8, and the $1,200 Galaxy Z Flip8. However, Samsung’s new foldable lineup is more confusing than it might initially seem. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is an entirely new model of foldable phone, and is shorter, wider, and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, which, according to Samsung, is actually the successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold7.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra comes with a few notable improvements compared to the Z Fold7, including an upgraded 50-megapixel ultrawide camera (up from 12-megapixels) to accompany the 200-megapixel main camera and 10-megapixel telephoto lens; a larger, 5,000 mAh battery (up from 4,400 mAh); slightly brighter displays on the 6.5-inch cover screen and 8-inch main screen; a new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor for improved performance; and faster charging speeds coming in at 45 W for wired charging and 20 W for wireless charging (up from 25 W and 15 W, respectively). Samsung also implemented a new titanium-alloy film and enhanced titanium plate (also featured on the Z Fold8 and Z Flip8) on the main display that allows for increased strength and flexibility (which should help it better withstand repeated folding), while also minimizing the crease and improving the tactile feel. You’ll have the choice between 256 GB and 512 GB (both with 12 GB of RAM) or 1 TB of storage (with 16 GB of RAM), which is identical to the Fold7.
While the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra’s larger displays (and bigger battery) make it a better fit for apps and multitasking, the Z Fold8 is better for entertainment (like watching movies or mobile gaming). Measuring 123.9 mm tall and 81.9 mm wide when folded, it’s similar to the size of a passport. On the front is a 5.5-inch cover display that opens up to a 7.6-inch main display (and both support a 120 Hz refresh rate). The wider aspect ratios allow content (such as YouTube videos, TikToks, Instagram Reels, and ebooks) to fit more naturally on both screens, eliminating the black bars that typically appear at the top and bottom on taller, narrower foldables. The Z Fold8 is also more comfortable to hold one-handed than the Fold8 Ultra, and easily fits into back pockets. The Fold8 is also slightly more affordable than the Z Fold8 Ultra, but there are some trade-offs. Instead of a triple camera system with a telephoto lens, you’ll get a dual setup with a 50 megapixel wide-angle lens and a 50 megapixel ultrawide lens, with 10x digital zoom. There’s also a smaller 4,800 mAh battery with a claimed 26 hours of video playback. It is, however, powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and is available in the same storage configurations, including 256 GB and 512 GB (both with 12 GB of RAM) or 1 TB of storage (with 16 GB of RAM).
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip8 is an iterative update from its predecessor. It has the same 4.1-inch cover display and 6.9-inch main display (with a 120 Hz refresh rate), a 4,300 mAh battery, and an identical dual-camera setup (with a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera). Samsung did, however, upgrade the processor to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and the Z Flip8 is slightly thinner and lighter. It also comes with a few new software features, including a redesigned cover display that lets you do more without having to open the phone. This includes access to a new app drawer and the ability to create and edit Now Brief cards (to see information like calendar events, music playlists, and weather alerts at a glance). You’ll also have the choice between two storage configurations: 256 GB or 512 GB, both with 12 GB of RAM.
During my hands-on time with all three devices, I found that both the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip8 were very similar to their predecessors. Both phones were thin, lightweight, and the creases on the main display were practically invisible. Samsung also made it a lot easier to open and close the Z Fold8 Ultra despite its thinness (a major pain point on the last version). I’m most excited for the Galaxy Z Fold8, which seems like a better, more affordable alternative to the Z Fold8 Ultra — especially for those who want a foldable for entertainment rather than more ambitious app multitasking. But I’ll have to see how they perform under real-world conditions to determine how they compare to our current top picks, especially in light of their price; both the Z Fold8 Ultra and Z Flip8 are $100 more than last year’s versions. Each device is currently available for preorder and will officially go on sale starting August 7th, and I’ll have more thoughts in the coming weeks.
The competition
The Motorola Razr+ (2026), which is almost identical to the Razr Ultra (2026) in specs, is $400 cheaper than the Razr Ultra but makes some trade-offs. It has a smaller battery, at 4,500 mAh (which is also smaller than what you can find on the standard Motorola Razr), 12 GB of RAM, and a less powerful, Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor. I suggest spending the extra money on the Razr Ultra (2026) for its larger battery, additional RAM, and better processor.
Motorola still sells the Motorola Razr (2025) and Motorola Razr Ultra (2025), though now at reduced prices; you can also find them on sale at third-party retailers. Considering the lack of new features in the 2026 versions, last year’s lineup remains a solid option, especially if you don’t need the bigger batteries and upgraded camera sensors in this year’s model. Keep in mind, however, that the 2025 models come with one less year of security updates.
Samsung’s Galaxy FlipFE is the cheaper version of the Galaxy Z Flip7. But as with any budget model, some sacrifices are involved. It has a smaller, 4,000 mAh battery, a smaller display and cover screen, and an Exynos 2400 processor instead of the Exynos 2500 processor powering the Galaxy Z Flip7. Storage is capped at 128 GB, whereas the Galaxy Z Flip7 comes with up to 512 GB. Although the Galaxy Z Flip7 is more expensive, it offers more features for the price.
