Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac’s own $3.3 million Bugatti was brazenly stolen from one of the company’s buildings after Rimac left his keys in the car.
Rimac posted to Instagram on Thursday to tell the story of how his Bugatti Chiron was stolen at a company facility in Croatia.
A man who Rimac thought was looking for a job at the factory casually walked up to the vehicle, opened the door, and drove off, making his way to Slovenia and then Austria.
Rimac said the car was able to be tracked remotely, and the thief was eventually caught by police.
Security footage from the Croatia facility shows the man wearing a hoodie and strolling around the vehicle before pulling in and pulling out of the area. Rimac posted the footage to Instagram and joked, “ultimate joyride loading.”
CNN’s Sara Sidner reported on the story on Friday and couldn’t help but crack up at Rimac leaving his keys inside such an expensive vehicle.
She said:
The CEO of Bugatti says his $3.3 million Bugatti was stolen after he left the keys inside of that extremely expensive vehicle at the company’s facility in Croatia. He says it’s normally safe to do these sorts of things there, but on this day, a man who claimed he was looking for a job at the factory got into the vehicle and took off. The owner says police used the vehicle’s tracking system to follow it into Slovenia and eventually into Austria.
Sidner added, “Two things I’m never gonna have to worry about. One, having a car that’s worth $3.3 million, and two, leaving the keys in the car in the ignition.”
Rimac said he will never repeat the mistake.
“Don’t try your luck — it will not happen again,” he said.
