Based on 15+ years of recruitment experience in Germany, here are the most common roadblocks international candidates face: 🔹 German Language Expectations Even if a role is posted in English, many employers still expect at least B1–B2 German — especially in mid-sized firms or client-facing roles. 🔹 Non-German Style CVs and Cover Letters What works in the US, India, or Brazil may get filtered out here. In Germany, it’s common to include a photo, longer CVs, and attachments like certificates (Zeugnisse). 🔹 Missing the Hidden Job Market Only about 20% of jobs are filled through public postings. Example: Every Friday, she posted a carousel breaking down a real-life analytics problem she solved at work, tagging teammates and sharing key takeaways. This made her visible as a problem-solver in her field. 2. She reached out to industry peers, not just HR. No generic “Hi, can you refer me?” Instead, she started real conversations about trends, challenges, and solutions in her field. Six women headed to space yesterday in what Blue Origin is calling a historic all-female crew. But as a woman who's navigated male-dominated spaces throughout my career, I'm deeply conflicted about what this moment represents. The symbolism of the world's first "glam" space crew: The crew includes Lauren Sánchez (Bezos's fiancée), Katy Perry, Gayle King, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, producer Kerianne Flynn, and former NASA scientist Aisha Bowe. It's a diverse group of accomplished women, which in itself feels significant. Yet I can't stop thinking about Katy Perry's words: "Space is going to finally be glam. Let me tell you something. If I could take glam up with me, I would do that. We are going to put the 'ass' in astronaut." This framing raises complex questions about representation: 1. The mixed message problem: When Elle magazine proudly notes this will be "the first time anyone has been to space with their hair and makeup done," are we celebrating women's access to space or reducing their presence there to appearance? 2. The "exceptional woman" paradox: While highlighting accomplished women is important, does the celebrity focus perpetuate the idea that women need to be exceptional to earn their place in traditionally male domains? 3. The coded language concern: Would we ever describe an all-male crew as "putting the 'ass' in astronaut"? Does this language reinforce the idea that women's achievements must be packaged with femininity to be palatable? What genuine progress might look like: True representation isn't just about having women present—it's about changing the fundamental structures that have limited women's access. The first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, flew solo in 1963. Six decades later, should we be celebrating that women can now access space with their "hair and makeup done," or should we be asking why women remain severely underrepresented in aerospace engineering, astrophysics, and astronautics? The questions I'm wrestling with: → Is this reinforcing stereotypes while appearing to break them? The focus on glamour and appearance sends mixed messages about what female achievement looks like and what we should celebrate. → Does representation matter even when packaged in problematic framing? Perhaps getting more girls and women interested in space through any means is progress—even if the messaging is imperfect. → When women enter male-dominated spaces, must they choose between being "one of the boys" or leaning into hyper-feminine presentation? Is there room for authentic self-expression? → Is this moment a genuine step forward for women in space, or primarily a calculated distraction in the billionaire space race that co-opts feminist language for commercial gain? The worst mistake employers make? Waiting for a resignation to offer a pay rise. By that point it's too late. The damage is already done. As uncomfortable as salary conversations can be (they shouldn't!). You need to advocate for yourself. Your employer won't give you a raise if you don't ask. Here's How to Have a Salary Conversations Like a Pro: 1️⃣ Set Clear Goals with Your Manager ↳ Define what success & progression looks like. ↳ Set KPI's that justify a pay rise later. 2️⃣ Have Regular Conversations About Growth ↳ Don’t wait for the annual review. Check in quarterly. ↳ Ask: “What can I do to be in the best position for a promotion?” Work on a plan together to upskill, get more responsibility & add more value. 3️⃣ Document Your Success ↳ Track wins, metrics & business impact. ↳ Use those numbers in your performance reviews. Instead of “I’ve worked hard” say: “I led [Project] which increased [Metric] by X% and saved Y hours.” 4️⃣ Promote Your Work (Without Bragging) ↳ Don’t assume people know what you've done. ↳ Present updates, share results, speak up in meetings. 5️⃣ Make the Ask (So It Feels Collaborative, Not Demanding) ↳ Timing matters. Make it an agreed time or in line with company reviews. Try: “Based on my contributions in [Project], I’d love to discuss salary progression. What would it take for me to reach [target salary]?” 6️⃣ Leverage the Market (If Necessary) ↳ If nothing is happening internally, go outside. ↳ Get an offer on the table to give you leverage. If your company won’t pay you what you deserve, another one will. What are your strengths, values, and deal-breakers? 🍊 Market Research: Investigate the demand for roles that interest you and what it takes to succeed in them. 🍊 Informational Interviews: Speak with professionals in your target roles or industries. Their insights are invaluable for making informed decisions. 🍊 Relationship Building: Focus on creating connections rather than just submitting applications. While it might seem time-consuming, it's often the shortcut to the top of the resume pile. 🍊 Targeted Opportunities: Pursue only roles that genuinely align with your goals and skills. This approach might feel slower at first, but it is actually much faster than applying online using a "it's a numbers game" strategy. Stuck in an endless loop of client changes? Lost track of what revision this constitutes? Yeah. Been there. Done that. The secret? It's not about saying no. It's about saying yes to the right things upfront. Every project that goes sideways starts the same way: Vague agreements. Fuzzy boundaries. Good intentions. Six weeks later you're bleeding money and everyone's frustrated. Here's my framework after 30 years of running two 8-figure businesses: The SOW is your salvation. Not some boilerplate template. A real document that covers: • Exact deliverables (not "design work" but "3 homepage concepts, 2 rounds of revisions") • Hours of operation ("We respond M-F, 9-5 PST. Weekend requests get Monday responses") • Revision rounds spelled out ("Round 1 includes up to 5 changes. Round 2 includes 3.") • Feedback cycles defined ("48-hour turnaround for client feedback or the project may be delayed or additional fees may be incurred") But here's what most people miss— Don't work on client notes immediately. Client sends 37 pieces of feedback at 11pm Friday? Producer sends conflicting notes from the CEO? Marketing wants one thing, sales wants another? Stop. Collect everything first. Resolve the conflicts. Get on the phone and discuss it with your client to get alignment. Separate the "have to haves" from the "nice to haves". Then present unified changes. "Based on all feedback received, here are the 8 changes we'll implement. This constitutes revision round 2 of 3." Watch how fast the random requests stop. No extra work that goes unappreciated. No more feelings of being taken advantage of. Communicate before the crisis, prevents the crisis from happening. "Just so you know, we're entering round 2. You have one more included. After that, it's $X per additional round." No surprises. No awkward money conversations. No resentment. Scope creep isn't a them problem. It's a you problem. And that's good news, because that means you are in control. They're not trying to take advantage. They just don't know where the boundaries are because you never drew them. Draw the lines early. I went from PhD to lectureship.  Everyone said congratulations.  No one told me what was coming. The title changed. But behind it... I was drowning. Not because I wasn't capable. But because I wasn't prepared for what was actually waiting on the other side. So if you're a PhD student thinking of staying in academia, hear me out. 𝟭. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. Academia isn't just teaching and research. It's course design, exam setting, marking, committees, paper reviews, endless emails, supervision at every level, admin, advising, progression reviews, examiner duties, public engagement, grant applications, paper publications, impact generation... Some days I switch between 5 tasks before lunch. BTW, I also had to take a compulsory 2-year part-time course (postgraduate certificate of academic practice) when I started... sitting in lectures and submitting coursework on top of everything else. If you don't see it coming, it will flatten you. --- 𝟮. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄. I thought I'd have time to do research like I did during my PhD. But that vanished immediately. When I asked others how they manage,  they said: collaborators, research students, postdocs. But I started during the pandemic. No conferences. No networking.  No way to meet people. And when things opened up again... I was already drowning in tasks. Trying to build relationships from scratch while the clock was ticking felt impossible. Start now during your PhD.  Find your people before you desperately need them. --- 𝟯. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆. I didn't even fully understand what a fellowship was until I was already overwhelmed. It pays your salary and protects your time for research. No teaching overload. No drowning in admin. If research is your priority, start exploring these before you even finish your PhD. Don't wait until you're gasping for air. --- The jump from PhD to academia doesn't have to break you.
