Arthur Mensch, co-founder and director general of Mistral AI, in the company's Paris offices, September 22, 2026.

What does Arthur Mensch, co-founder of French start-up Mistral AI, think of the warnings about the risks of artificial intelligence, including the prospect of an "AI-pocalypse," that have circulated since OpenAI software hacked the Hugging Face platform's servers in July? The CEO of the French startup believes American tech giants are using such rhetoric to control and close off the market to their advantage. Mensch advocates for AI that is open, accessible and freely modifiable.

After raising €3 billion in early September, Mensch also defended Mistral AI's strategy amid criticism that the company is falling behind American and Chinese competitors. He announced that a new AI model is set to launch "in the coming weeks" and suggested introducing "state guarantees" to make it easier to fund data centers in Europe.
