The birds flew more than 26 miles over open ocean, with stories wrapped around their legs.

When the L.A. Times printed the stories, the pigeons even got byline credit — with names like Orlando, Del Mar, Rags, Ventura, Whitewings and Lulu running at the top of each piece.
