Which country will be the leader in AI in the coming decades? In 2017, China announced it aims to take up the mantle by 2030, and new research suggests it may be well on its way. An analysis of over two million academic papers by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence found that China is overtaking the U.S. not just in papers submitted and published, but also in the production of high-impact papers — in this case, the top 10% of papers cited. Measuring citations is a good way to measure the quality of a paper, and they’re also a lagging indicator of potential impact. That means that Chinese investment in AI research came years before their 2017 announcement. Can the U.S. catch up? Adapted from the Idea Watch section of the July-August 2019 issue of HBR and “China May Overtake US in AI Research,” by Carissa Schoenic.
