StarHunt is a GitHub sourcing tool that ranks engineers by what they ship: contributions over the last twelve months, the languages in their own repositories, and how recently they pushed. You describe the role in plain English and get a ranked shortlist with public contact details where they exist. Free plan with 3 searches and unlimited exports, Pro at $49 per month (September 2026).

The approach

Why StarHunt finds the people
that other tools miss

Most sourcing tools search profiles. StarHunt starts from repositories.

Repository discovery

For each technology, StarHunt maintains a curated list of reference repositories, the projects that define the ecosystem. Node.js? That includes fastify, nestjs, express, prisma, and 40+ others.

Contributor extraction

StarHunt fetches the contributors of each reference repo, the people who merged code into it.

Location filtering

Each contributor's profile is cross-checked against location, bio, and company fields. "Paris", "France", "FR" and many other variants are matched automatically, and smaller towns are mapped to their nearest hub, so a developer in Massy still shows up for Paris.

Job description to candidates

Paste a full job description or just describe who you're looking for in a sentence. StarHunt reads it and turns it into a targeted search across the right technologies, role and location, automatically.

Ranked by real work, exported in one click

Results stream in live, ordered by evidence of real work: contributions over the last twelve months, the languages in their own repositories, how widely their projects are used, and how recently they shipped. Each profile comes with the public email or LinkedIn its owner chose to publish, the repository they ship to, and the languages in their own projects, so you have something specific to say when you write.

By the numbers

1M+

repositories analyzed

318,000+

developer profiles indexed

Counted on the index itself. Method and full breakdown in the reachability report.

StarHunt starts from repositories rather than from people. Of everything it crawls, more than 1,400 are kept as starting points, up to 215 for a single technology, and the engineers who actually contribute to them are what the index ranks. That keeps it smaller than a full sweep of GitHub, on purpose: fewer profiles, each one qualified by the work it took to appear there.

Sourced from the repositories that define your stack

The best engineer for your stack rarely writes the right words in their bio. StarHunt finds them through the open-source projects your stack is built on.

What you get

A shortlist with the contact details

Finding the person is half the job. StarHunt hands you the other half: how to reach them, and what to say.

Public email and LinkedIn, where people published them

Every profile shows the channels that person published, so you can tell at a glance who is reachable directly before you spend time on them. Nothing is scraped from commits, and anyone can remove themselves in one click.

Something specific to say

You get the repository they ship to, the languages in their own projects, and when they last pushed. Enough to write a first line that could only have been written to them.

Built on the repositories that define your stack

One hand-picked list of reference repositories per technology, the people who contribute to them, and everyone their own public work connects to.

Python Node.js React Go Rust TypeScript Java Flutter Kubernetes PyTorch GraphQL Scala Swift Kotlin and 25+ more

Track who you have contacted

Mark a profile to contact or contacted straight from the results, and keep the whole pipeline in one place. Take the full list with you whenever you want, on any plan.

Proof

One real search, published in full

Judge the tool on its output rather than on our word for it.

That sentence was the whole input. No filter form, no query operators. The page below shows the five profiles StarHunt ranked first, each one linked to its public GitHub account, with the repositories and the recent contributions that put it there. Nothing was reordered and nothing was left out.

Questions

What StarHunt is, in five answers

What is StarHunt?

StarHunt is a GitHub sourcing tool for technical recruiters. It indexes developers by what they publicly build on GitHub, their own repositories and the projects they contribute to, then ranks them against a role you describe in plain language.

How does StarHunt find developers?

It starts from hand-picked reference repositories for each technology, extracts the people who actually contribute to them, and enriches each profile from public GitHub data. Ranking uses building signals, contributions over the last twelve months, the languages in a developer's own repositories and how recently they pushed, rather than follower counts or a self-declared skill list.

How is that different from searching GitHub directly?

GitHub's own search matches keywords in a bio. A developer who ships Rust every week but writes "software engineer" in their profile is invisible to it. StarHunt reads the work instead of the description, and returns the public email or LinkedIn each person chose to publish.

What does StarHunt cost?

The free plan gives 3 searches with unlimited exports and no credit card. Pro is $49 per month, or $489 per year which is two months free, for unlimited searches, billed in your own currency. Team access is priced on a call. Searches are the only metered thing: exports and contact details are included on every plan.

Is sourcing from public GitHub data allowed?

Yes, within limits that are worth knowing. StarHunt only processes information a developer chose to make public, it never scrapes private data, and any developer can ask to be removed from the index. What you may then send them is governed by GDPR and CAN-SPAM, which is covered in full in the legal guide on the blog.
