You should be able to do whatever you want with hardware you purchase - and the ps5-linux project for the PlayStation 5 continues expanding Linux support.
With the latest updates from new contributors that have joined up, they've together managed to expand the ps5-linux firmware support to include versions 7.61, 7.20 and 6.50. Not just the original bigger models, but some of the slim PlayStation 5's can now run Linux on them too.
Features now include:
- HDMI 4K60 video and audio output.
- M.2 SSD as dedicated Linux partition.
- All USB ports usable for peripherals.
- BD drive usable via custom ahci driver.
- Internal Bluetooth usable via custom xhci driver.
- Ethernet port usable via custom gbe driver.
Firmware version support now includes:
- 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.21 without M.2 support
- 4.00, 4.02, 4.03, 4.50, 4.51 with M.2 support
- 5.00, 5.02, 5.10, 5.50 with M.2 support
- 6.00, 6.02, 6.50 with M.2 support
- 7.20, 7.61 with M.2 support
They previously said they wouldn't support firmware versions 6.xx and above - but more vulnerabilities were found to enable the support. They have a moving target though, as no doubt Sony will continue to release new firmware versions to try and block some parts that are used by ps5-linux. They now say firmware version 8.00 and above will not be supported.
Incredible work all around though.
Sony's PlayStation 5 is not likely to stop being supported any time soon (many years ahead yet), but even so - I consider projects like this essential to keep hardware from going to landfill. Turning them into a nice little Linux gaming rig is a good thing for it.
