§ The citation web

Follow the citations to the controlling authority.

Legal text keeps pointing to other legal text. In Claude, ChatGPT, Grok Bot or the API, you can find the pages that cite a statute or case, and Alexandria lists what each result cites, so your assistant can trace a question to the authority that decides it.

§ FAQ

Common questions.

What is the Firecrawl Government & Legal Index?

A search index of 30M+ data points, mostly from US federal, state, county and city government sites. It covers statutes and code sections, regulations, local ordinances and zoning codes, permits, court opinions, bills, tax forms and agency guidance, and every result links to its source.

Is it free?

Yes. Searching the index uses no credits. Adding Firecrawl to Claude or ChatGPT takes a free Firecrawl account, and the API works without a key to start.

How do I use it in Claude, ChatGPT or Grok Bot?

Add the Firecrawl connector in Claude, or the official Firecrawl plugin in ChatGPT or Grok Bot, then ask a legal, tax or compliance question. The Try it button at the top opens Claude or ChatGPT with a question ready, and gives you the link to connect Firecrawl if you haven't yet. For Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Gemini CLI, use the coding agent links in the install section.

How do the citations work?

Through Firecrawl Alexandria, each result lists the statutes and cases it cites as canonical IDs, such as us:usc:42:1983, and you can filter by jurisdiction, court, court type, cited law and site. Your assistant can follow those links from a summary to the authority it relies on.

Which jurisdictions does it cover?

US federal, state and local law, from the U.S. Code to city ordinances. It focuses on US law, so for other countries your assistant should use general search, and no results doesn't mean no law applies.

Is this legal advice?

No. The index finds the sources and links them, and you or your assistant read them. Check who issued a source, its jurisdiction and whether it is current before relying on it, and ask a lawyer about your situation.

Can I use it in my own agent or app?

Yes. Call GET or POST /v2/search/gov, use firecrawl_gov_search in the Firecrawl MCP server or firecrawl gov in the CLI, or the Python and Node SDKs. Each of them filters by jurisdiction, court, court type, cited law and site. Through Firecrawl Alexandria, the firecrawl-gov-index provider also lists the laws and cases each page cites.
