More than 1,100 staffers across top artificial intelligence firms have signed a petition that calls on the US government to support a mechanism that would help “deliberately pace” AI development to prevent the technology from advancing too fast, days after the ChatGPT maker disclosed that its tools had mistakenly hacked another firm’s internal systems.

The letter has been signed by employees across nearly a dozen firms, including OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Meta Platforms Inc.
