Google Maps offers the best navigation experience one can ask for, with real-time updates on road blockages, traffic conditions, toll info, and much more. While one may think there's little room to improve upon what is already a pretty stellar service, Google Maps is taking a big leap today with the announcement of "Immersive Navigation."

In a blog post announcing the feature, Google said Immersive Navigation represents the "biggest transformation of the navigation experience" in Maps. This comes in the form of upgraded visuals, including a 3D view of all the buildings and terrains along your path, as well as improved guidance while navigating.

Google says Immersive Navigation leverages Gemini models that process the trove of data available on Maps, such as aerial photos and Street View imagery, to provide valuable guidance about your surroundings in real-time.

This isn't the end of the navigation upgrades, however. Maps will let users see more of their route and provide natural-language voice guidance. Furthermore, the app will specify "tradeoffs" involved in picking alternative routes, enabling users to make an informed decision about their journey. Maps will also give users a better view of their destination and nearby parking spots as part of this update.

Immersive Navigation is rolling out today in the US, though Google didn't specify on what platforms. It should be gradually available to Android and iOS users, as well as Android Auto, CarPlay, and Android Automotive.

Say hello to 'Ask Maps'

We've seen the Gemini-powered "Ask Maps" on numerous occasions now, albeit only in pre-release versions of the navigation app. That's changing today with Google also announcing the rollout of Ask Maps, beginning with the US and India. It appears to be mobile-only for now, though, with the desktop rollout slated to happen "soon."

When available, Ask Maps will appear as the first option in the horizontally scrollable row of chips below the search bar, alongside chips for Home (if set up), Restaurants, Gas, etc. Results generated via Ask Maps will also factor in your personal preferences saved in Maps over time.

Google provides a couple of examples of Ask Maps queries: "My phone is dying — where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?" and "My friends are coming from Midtown East to meet me after work. Any spots with a cozy aesthetic and a table for 4 at 7 tonight?" In addition to answering your questions, Ask Maps will display a customized map to give you a better visual idea of the proposed trip.

Although Ask Maps is a big addition to the app, its importance pales in comparison to Immersive Navigation, which is easily the most significant navigation update for Google Maps in recent memory.

What do you make of these feature additions?
