In 2021, I created a blog post calling out Soydevs who create unoptimized websites on high specced computers without worrying about poor people who can’t afford expensive computers or smartphones or who have limited data allowances.
A “Soydev” is a stereotype of a hipster who codes in an overpriced coffee shop on their MacBooks, using an unoptimized IDE (VS Code), producing crappy, unoptimized code. A “folk” of the Soyboy.
In 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT. A chatbot that takes prompts from users and generates responses. The Soydev’s started asking programming questions and blindly pasting ChatGPT responses into VS Code.
Difference from past developers who at least used Stack Overflow, exposing them to additional information. ChatGPT “Here’s what you asked for”. Losing all important context.
The other problem is you’re not learning through problem-solving if code is generated for you. You just have code without the ability to manually debug or upgrade without AI help.
Worse. Vibe coded public facing websites are a security breach waiting to happen. You can ask AI to make code “secure”. As mentioned, AI trained on Stack Overflow… Old developers would know to double-check, but vibe coders blindly copy and paste.
With many companies already getting hacked and leaking everyone’s personal information. What makes it worse by adding code that the developer does not know what it does?
People who should have been gatekeeped from developing apps if they don’t know how to code. They can’t fix security issues that arise without knowing how each block of code interacts with each other.
Vibe-coded apps are a future security disaster. One accepted because pushing against it is pushing against AI hype. Gatekeep now or face mass hacks and project shutdowns after people started relying on those projects.
