This visualization is based on data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS), a fascinating government study that asks thousands of Americans to record exactly how they spend every minute of their day.
Since 2003, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has called random households and asked one person to walk through their previous day down to the minute, from when they woke up to when they went to sleep. Participants describe activities like "eating breakfast," "commuting to work," or "watching TV," which researchers then code into categories.
I set out to answer the age-old question: WHO UP RN? I've estimated what Americans are doing at this very moment, taking into account time zones, holidays, and seasonal patterns.
