GameStop posts mock ceasefire as Halo goes cross-platform
GameStop has joined the ongoing discussion around Xbox’s multiplatform strategy with a post declaring the “official cessation of the console wars.”

The retailer published a mock press release on X, humorously styled as a diplomatic treaty. It announces that all “claims to exclusivity are hereby dissolved” following confirmation that Halo: Campaign Evolved will launch on PlayStation in 2026. The post read:
“GameStop, acting under its authority as a Neutral Entity and The World’s Retail Gaming & Trade-in Destination, hereby declares the official cessation of the console wars.”

The timing matched recent statements from Xbox executives suggesting that console rivalry has become less relevant. Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty told The New York Times that Microsoft no longer views PlayStation as its primary competitor.
“Our biggest competition isn’t another console. We are competing more and more with everything from TikTok to movies.”
The statement happened with Xbox’s multiplatform expansion, which has brought former exclusives like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Forza Horizon 5, and Gears of War: Reloaded to PlayStation. This week Halo Studios announced Halo Campaign Evolved, which will be the first Halo game to launch PlayStation.
Cross-platform play, subscription services, and cloud streaming have already softened the divide between platforms. Both Sony and Microsoft now favor software reach over hardware attachment, as distributing games across multiple devices is easier and brings broader returns than relying on console sales alone.
