New ✨! Deep dive on Duolingo with insights on their product, strategy and growth: https://t.co/SltnFmjo51… Here's a TL;DR of my favourite observations 🧵👇 https://t.co/TL8ahMcsgF

1) Most tech companies are a layer on a marketplace (ex. Uber, Tinder, Coursera...), but not Duolingo: they generate their own content and own the learner experience end to end. It's a lot harder to generate growth and retention in this setup, but Duolingo does a fantastic job.

2) Quick look at their topline metrics: * 40 million+ MAUs, 34% increase in 2020 vs. 2019 * Top of the line 4% paid subscriber penetration (as % of MAU) * Over 50% of their DAUs have streaks longer than 7 days and ~2.5% MAUs have streaks longer than 365 days!!

3) Duolingo has carved a monopoly for itself in the niche of auto-generated content when everyone else (Coursera, EdX et al.) in the ed-tech industry was busy fighting the perfect competition of marketplaces. As Peter Thiel says: Competition is for Losers youtu.be/3Fx5Q8xGU8k

4) Duolingo's product philosophy: Mobile-first, fun, effective and free * Make apps for a mobile-first world → +distribution * Make learning fun by gamifying everything → +retention * Make learning effective using machine learning and data analytics → +value More to follow👇

5) Gamification: Duolingo uses a lot of traditional video game mechanics: XP, streaks, collectibles, leaderboards etc 🕹 Leaderboards increased time spent learning on Duolingo ~20%. >50% of their DAUs have streaks longer than 1 week, and ~1M users have streaks longer than 1 year

6) Effectiveness: Duolingo runs over 500 A/B tests every quarter and extensively uses machine learning and data analytics to increase learning effectiveness, here's a couple production examples they cite:

7) Growth: Duolingo has seen crazy growth over the past years. Even though it's hard to see how, most of their users actually come from referrals. My theory is that word-of-mouth works so well for them due to the property of intrinsic virality x.com/eshear/status/…

8) In future, as GPT (and generative machine learning) unlock a new product category from auto-generated content, maybe we'll see Duolingo as an “early” pioneer of this idea. Perhaps, other companies will realize an even larger potential of this Duolingo company model.
