Bold prediction: OpenAI will be forced to pivot from "most advanced AI tool” to “most addictive digital friend”. Or they will lose.

Now the arguments: (hypothesis):

1: Burn rate vs revenue implies a 1-2 year cash crunch if monetization does not change.

2. Ads may or may not work; meanwhile, some competitors have practically unlimited resources - not a great position for an arms-race attrition war

3: Tools are swappable commodities. Developers start using competitor AI coder the moment benchmarks are published.

4. during last update openAI deprecated o4 family models, some users created a whole movement/protest begging to get it back because of emotional attachment. Click this #keep4o to see yourself

5. Homo sapiens are social animals - we are wired for groups, belonging, and attachment. That is why we do not replace our best friends just because a smarter person walks in the room.

few others:

6. Character.AI (according to Sensor Tower data) users have spent roughly ~93-98 minutes/day on the app in recent periods - higher than even TikTok and Insta in those comparisons.

7. Exploiting the Archaic Brain: social media algos (ex insta) have evolved to extremely addictive, using simple mechanics they exploit human "archaic" brain (specifically our evolutionary drive to seek novelty) and weaponize it within a radically different modern environment.

Now imagine that superhuman intelligence can do, one that owned by entity with sole goal of maximizing the profit.

You might argue that this is somehow unethical, but the market doesn’t reward ethics - it rewards results. This requires a founder with a specific psychological profile: one that prioritizes systemic optimization over individual well-being and broader social consequences. It’s no accident that someone like Zuck built the most addictive social engine in history. If OpenAI faces an existential crisis and needs to bridge a $14 billion USD hole, do you really believe they might the use same levers?
