A CUSIP is a 9-character code that identifies a specific US or Canadian security, including most corporate, government, and municipal bonds. CUSIP Global Services assigns them.
The first six characters identify the issuer, the next two identify the issue, and the last is a check digit. Apple's 3.85% 2043 note, for example, uses CUSIP 037833AL4. A CUSIP is a North American identifier; the international form of the same security is the ISIN.

An ISIN (International Securities Identification Number) is a 12-character code defined by ISO 6166. Exchanges, custodians, and data vendors use it as the common identifier for a bond across countries.
It starts with a two-letter country code, then a nine-character national identifier, then a check digit. For US securities that national identifier is the CUSIP, so 037833AL4 becomes ISIN US037833AL42. UK gilts and most European bonds have an ISIN but no CUSIP.
