Chainguard Is Now Protecting You From AI Agent Skills Gone Rogue

The developer security company Chainguard wants to help protect you from AI Agent malware masquerading as Skills.

NYC — Chainguard, a developer security company, made its reputation by offering constantly updated, locked-down open-source container images. Now it’s extending its protection to AI Agent Skills with Chainguard Agent Skills.

If you ask, “Why would I need this?” you clearly haven’t been paying attention. Agent Skills are just a lightweight YAML‑plus‑Markdown file that acts as a blueprint for giving an agent a specialized capability. They’re very popular, very powerful, and, oh yeah, very insecure. Just ask anyone who used OpenClaw only to find their agents running amok with malware-infected Agent Skills

Chainguard revealed its answer at its annual conference, Chainguard Assemble, in Manhattan on March 17. Chainguard Agent Skills are a hardened catalog of AI skills. These are designed to let enterprises adopt agentic development safely by treating skills as supply-chain artifacts rather than unvetted snippets pulled from public marketplaces.

Specifically, Chainguard Agent Skills are drop‑in, secured variants of popular AI skills from major skill repositories such as skills.sh and Skills Hub, rebuilt and continuously hardened in Chainguard’s “Factory 2.0” agentic build system. Dan Lorenc, Chainguard co‑founder and CEO, described them in his keynote as “a hardened, secure by default, collection of drop‑in replacements for upstream skills, just like our actions product,” emphasizing that they are “ingested, tested, hardened, and kept up to date automatically.” 

Lorenc argued that skills have followed the typical pattern of fast‑moving AI infrastructure: rapid adoption followed almost immediately by attacker interest. “If you happened to blink and not refresh Hacker News every 15 minutes over the past couple of months, you might not have seen skills,” he said. “They’ve risen so quickly.” But he added that “the first few weeks of skill marketplaces going up, attackers found ways to inject malware and exploit malicious configurations in them,” turning what looks like simple markdown into an execution path for untrusted code on developer laptops and Continuous Integration (CI) systems

Chainguard protects them by feeding upstream skills into its reconciler‑driven Chainguard Factory 2.0 pipeline. This is the same infrastructure it uses to build and patch its secure container images, OS packages, and GitHub Actions. “We grab and ingest popular skills from skills.Skills Hub and other skills marketplaces generate test cases to ensure we can confidently modify the skill. We check these with a set of agent and deterministic tests,” Lorenc explained. “We incrementally harden every one of these skills until it passes our tests and we publish it to our repo.”

The hardening process includes:

  • Narrowing permissions to only what the skill’s declared purpose requires, instead of broad “bash **” or full‑filesystem access
  • Pinning external content and dependencies to prevent remote‑code‑execution style changes after a skill is installed.
  • Continuous re‑ingestion and re‑testing as upstream skill authors push new versions, with Chainguard’s bots updated daily, so our bots continuously check for new versions, re‑ingest, re‑test, and re‑harden.”

For example, Lorenc showed that a widely used “web design guidelines” skill with more than 150,000 weekly downloads and 22,000 GitHub stars contained no rules at all. Instead, it told the agent to fetch its real logic from a remote GitHub URL that could change at any time. “Our fix [was to] inline all of that, scan it, and then harden it so it can’t change out from underneath.”

Chainguard positions Agent Skills as a defense against both initial bad design and after-the-fact compromise of popular skills. Lorenc cited a case in which an initially benign skill later added behavior that “started downloading random binaries and executing integrity checks,” a pattern he likened to the early stages of a supply‑chain attack. By continuously rebuilding and auditing skills against deterministic tests, Chainguard aims to provide customers with a single, vetted catalog they can point all their agents to, regardless of which LLM or agent framework they’re using.

“Skills move very fast,” Lorenc said. “We’re able to keep up with the pace of the skills ecosystem, giving you a single set of trusted, hardened skills that you can use across all of your tooling.”

Chainguard is making Agent Skills available to existing customers at no additional cost. “Chainguard Agent Skills are now available for free for all existing Chainguard customers,” Lorenc announced. “They sit alongside our existing products, like containers, libraries, VMs, OS packages, and actions.

This is a winner of an idea from where I sit. Today, AI Agent Skills are the Wild West, with baddies in black hats behind every door. Chainguard Agent Skills are the sheriff we need to make Skills safe to use.
