Amazon's Stargate series is officially no more.
In November 2025, Amazon gave a series order to a new Stargate series from Martin Gero, who previously worked on Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate Universe. No story details were revealed, although it was confirmed that Gero would serve as a showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Roland Emmerich, who directed the 1994 Stargate movie that kicked off the entire science-fiction franchise, was also aboard as an executive producer.
Per Variety, despite the series order last November, Amazon is no longer moving forward with the project, as the studio executives were reportedly concerned about it only appealing to diehard fans. While this iteration of Stargate has ended, Amazon is still interested in finding ways to continue the franchise.
Reports of what became Gero's Stargate series started in 2022, after Amazon acquired MGM Studios. Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the 1994 Stargate movie with Emmerich, was another executive producer for the Amazon show, as were Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell via Safehouse Pictures. The project also had Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi as consulting producers, with both having had extensive history working within the Stargate franchise.
On X, Michael Shanks, who played Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1, posted in response to the news that: "Yep. They did that." Mallozzi was resistant to the idea that the series was being geared toward diehard fans: "Nope. No. Sorry. Gonna have to push back on this. We were ever mindful of creating a show that would have broad appeal." In an additional post, Mallozzi went into further detail about why the cancellation is so disappointing:
Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.
There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this...
Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.
As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.
My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.
Before the new series was canceled by Amazon, Stargate began with Emmerich and Devlin's movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader. This paved the way for 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1, followed by five seasons of Stargate Atlantis. There has also been the two-season Stargate Universe, the one-season animated show Stargate Infinity, the web miniseries Stargate Origins, and the 2008 direct-to-video movies Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate Continuum, along with numerous games.
Stargate's cancellation comes amid a year of Amazon both ending and confidently moving forward with major science-fiction and fantasy franchises. In 2025, The Wheel of Time was controversially canceled after season 3, but in 2026, Rebecca Yarros' BookTok sensation Fourth Wing series was greenlit, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues, with season 3 set to debut on November 11 and season 4 reportedly already in early development.
With Amazon still interested in the Stargate IP, another attempt at a new series may come along, and with an approach that studio executives believe will be more appealing to viewers outside the core fanbase. It is one of many franchises that faces uncertainty, although there continues to be enormous potential considering the past decades of popularity and extensive number of existing stories across various mediums.
