MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external data sources and tools. Scite’s MCP server gives your AI assistant direct access to scientific literature search and Smart Citations from within tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI assistants.

The Scite MCP server provides access to over 1.6 billion Smart Citations across 280 million scientific articles. You can search the literature, view citation contexts classified as supporting, contrasting, or mentioning, check citation metrics and tallies, look up articles by DOI, and find related work. All content is delivered in full compliance with publisher agreements - we never expose content you don't have the right to access.

AI assistants frequently hallucinate citations—generating references that look plausible but don’t actually exist. Scite’s MCP server solves this by connecting your AI tool directly to real, verified scientific literature in real time. Every citation returned comes from Scite’s database of Smart Citations, which are extracted from full-text articles and classified as supporting, contrasting, or mentioning. Instead of relying on patterns from training data, your AI assistant retrieves actual papers with real DOIs, verified metadata, and citation context—so you can trust every reference it provides.

Yes. You need a Scite subscription. When you first connect, you’ll be prompted to sign in with your Scite account via OAuth 2.0. Your credentials are never shared with the AI client.

Yes. Any team member with a Scite subscription can connect their own account. Each user authenticates individually with their own Scite credentials. Looking to get your team set up? Talk to sales →

The MCP meets you where you already work. Use it inside ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI tools for quick citation checks, verifying references, and pulling Smart Citation context into your conversations. Scite’s platform at scite.ai offers deeper capabilities—systematic literature search, custom dashboards, full citation reports, and comprehensive discovery tools for in-depth research workflows. Think of the MCP as your citation copilot in any AI tool, and scite.ai as the full research workbench.

The Scite MCP provides access to all academic literature, including metadata and access options across both open and closed access sources. For open access articles, full text and Smart Citation context are available directly. For closed access sources, full text is available if you have the rights, and access instructions are always provided, whether that's proxy access via OpenURL through a LibKey or GetFTR integration, inter-library loan options, or purchasing through Article Galaxy. We're also rolling out support for custom institutional configurations. Contact us to set up access for your organization.

Scite searches inside the full text of articles, not just titles and abstracts. It provides Smart Citation signals showing whether findings have been supported or contradicted. And it includes built-in access resolution so you can actually read the papers it finds. No other research MCP does all three.

Get your content into the hands of researchers using ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools. Scite's MCP architecture surfaces Smart Citations from your articles without giving AI full access to your content — protecting your version of record while making it discoverable.
