// rarity index
Every game
scored 1–10 for rarity
Not just how many copies were made — how hard it actually is to find. Our Market Rarity Index uses real secondary market prices to measure acquisition difficulty across all 20 platforms.
What it measures
The rarity score reflects how difficult a game is to acquire on the secondary market — not just production numbers, but real supply and demand.
■
Common but expensive — Chrono Trigger had a large print run, but massive demand keeps prices high
■
Rare but cheap — obscure sports titles had tiny runs, but nobody wants them
How it works
1
Collect market prices
We gather loose cartridge prices for every game on each platform from active secondary market listings.
2
Rank within platform
Each game is ranked by price percentile against all other games on the same console — so a rare NES game is compared only to other NES games.
3
Assign rarity tier
The percentile maps to a 1–10 tier using boundaries anchored to the statistical distribution of real market data.
The rarity tiers
A pyramid distribution — most games are common, only 2% reach the top.
50% of games fall in tiers 1–4 (common territory). Only 12% reach tier 8 or above. The boundaries are anchored to the statistical distribution of real market prices across 12,000+ games.
Example: SNES
Madden NFL '94R1
NBA JamR3
Chrono TriggerR9
Aero FightersR10
Why use price?
Secondary market prices naturally encode both supply and demand. When a game is hard to find and many collectors want it, the price goes up. By ranking within each platform, we get fair cross-platform comparison that auto-adjusts to each console's market.
