Bandcamp has introduced a formal policy banning music and audio generated wholly or in substantial part by AI from its platform. Announced in a press release titled "Keeping Bandcamp Human" yesterday, January 13th, the platform described the policy as "putting human creativity first." The new guidelines will prohibit the use of AI tools to impersonate other artists or mimic their styles, aligning with the platform's existing rules on impersonation and intellectual property. The firm said it will remove content suspected of being AI-generated and encourages users to report releases that appear to rely heavily on generative AI. Bandcamp has implemented the policy with the intention of protecting musicians and ensuring fans can trust that the music on the platform is created by humans. The company framed the move as an extension of its longstanding mission to support artists through direct, equitable fan relationships, adding that it will update the policy as generative AI technologies continue to evolve.
