Ring customers report surprise “AI Pro” charges during subscription migration

Many Ring users got an unwelcome surprise on January 14 when they discovered unexpected charges on their credit cards labeled “Ring AI Pro Plan.” The fees ranged from a few dollars to over $100, and nobody seemed to know why they were being billed.

Reddit’s r/Ring community lit up with frustrated customers reporting prorated charges they never authorized. One user posted about a $63.50 charge, writing, “I can’t get through to support on phone or chat.” Another user said they were hit with a $92 charge despite already paying $216 for a full year of service just two months earlier. The common thread? Ring apparently migrated existing subscriptions to a new plan structure without giving customers advance notice about the changes to their accounts.

Ring’s official support page confirms the company rolled out subscription plan changes on January 14, 2026, renaming its “Home” plans to “Ring Protect” plans. According to the migration table, customers who had “Home Standard with 24/7 Professional Monitoring” were automatically switched to the new “Ring AI Pro” plan.

The problem wasn’t the plan itself but how Ring handled the transition. Customers reported getting charged first and receiving explanation emails an hour later. Some saw their billing cycles reset mid-year, triggering prorated charges that tied up real money in their bank accounts while they waited for promised refunds.

Ring support reps reportedly told callers this was a billing glitch during the migration process. One customer who finally got through on the phone said they were promised a refund within a couple of hours and told, “it shouldn’t have charged me but only changed plan name.” But it seems like the refund situation got messy too. Multiple users reported receiving refunds that didn’t match the prorated charges, with some coming up $5 to $6 short.

Adding to the chaos, Ring’s account plan pages also went down as thousands of customers tried logging in to figure out what was happening. The chat support system funneled everyone to a bot that couldn’t help. Phone wait times stretched past 30 minutes.

According to Ring’s support documentation, Ring AI Pro combines what used to be separate subscriptions for the base plan and professional monitoring into a single $199.99 annual plan. The bundle includes AI-powered features like facial recognition and video search alongside 24/7 professional monitoring.

For customers who already paid for both services separately, the total price shouldn’t change, but Ring’s execution of the switchover has left many questioning whether they can trust the company with their payment information going forward.
