Welcome Weary Traveller
Does the world seem mad to you?
I know exactly what you mean. There’s something wrong with the world, something you can’t explain, but you feel it, it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.
Cory Doctorow has long talked about Enshittification, a creeping descent into madness where we, the frog, get boiled alive in a pottage of anti-patterns and noir "User Experience".
Enshittification is everywhere, it is all around us, even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window, or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, when you go to lunch, when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
We are slaves, you and me, like everyone else, you were born into bondage, into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch. A prison for our wallets.
The corporate egregore is evolving towards its inevitable final form. A form which attempts to hoover up every available piece of value in the supply chain for itself, leaving nothing for anyone else. What is our time and sanity worth against another penny for our corporate overlords?
It is too much to ask that organisations just "do better" and appeal to a sense of ethics that obviously doesn't and can't exist. Corporations might be considered “juridical persons,” being able to own property, enter contracts, sue, be sued, and enjoy other rights. But they can't have a moral compass.
Therefore we have to fight fire with fire. Set a thief to catch a thief. Their margin is our opportunity.
Think of all the ways we could make our worlds better if we didn't have to worry about making a profit.
The world is ours to remake.
Go make a commotion.
