ORLEN Synthos Green Energy: Paving the way in a country ready for nuclear

~24

planned BWRX-300 SMRs

Poland still relies heavily on coal for electricity, but public support for nuclear energy is growing, with 80% of the population in favor. ORLEN Synthos Green Energy (OSGE), a joint venture between Synthos and PKN Orlen, plans to build ~24 BWRX-300 SMRs across six locations. The project is backed by the Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment and the National Atomic Energy Agency, with funding from the US Department of State and signed letters of interest from the US Export-Import Bank and the US International Development Finance Corporation totaling up to $4 billion.

"BWRX-300 is a breakthrough technology which, simultaneously, builds on GE Vernova Hitachi's decades of experience in nuclear power. It is safe, stable, and at the same time responds to modern challenges in the area of combating climate change."

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has submitted the first application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to construct a GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 SMR at the Clinch River site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This is the first construction permit application for a BWRX-300 in the US and would become the country’s first and only boiling water SMR under development.

"This milestone, in addition to the decision by the Province of Ontario to build the western world’s first SMR, demonstrates that this technology is advanced and real."

Vattenfall has chosen GVH’s BWRX-300 small modular reactor as one of two finalists as it evaluates the construction of new reactors next to its Ringhals plant on the Värö Peninsula in Sweden. The BWRX-300 offers a scalable, near-term option to meet rising electricity needs and can be implemented as early as the 2030s.

"We have a long history of supporting the nuclear industry in the Nordics and are ready to be a key collaborator in Vattenfall’s new nuclear program."

As part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023, Saskatchewan’s main utility, SaskPower, selected the BWRX-300 SMR configuration for possible deployment in the province. The BWRX-300 is a great fit for SaskPower, which provides electricity for remote areas and needs additional power to meet increased demand. This agreement could help bring nuclear power to Saskatchewan.

"Canada has a robust nuclear energy supply chain that we look forward to continuing to build to support the global deployment of the BWRX-300."

GE Vernova Hitachi’s BWRX-300 small modular reactor has been selected by Fermi Energia for potential deployment in Estonia. Today, much of Estonia’s electricity still comes from oil shale, but this project represents a major step toward the country’s goal of climate neutrality.

Studies and discussions with government officials, the developer, residents, and municipalities are underway, with the first SMR expected to be operational by 2035.
