How Grid works
Built so we can't see where you are.
End-to-End Encrypted
Your phone encrypts your location before sending it. Nobody else can read it, including us.
Private Maps
Grid renders maps with our own Protomaps tiles. Google and Apple never see where you’re looking.
You Control Everything
Pick who can see you and for how long. Turn it off whenever.
Your Data Stays Yours
We don’t sell anything to anyone. There are no ads and no third-party trackers in the app.
Unlimited Sharing
Make as many groups as you want. There’s no premium tier and nothing is paywalled.
100% Open Source
The Grid app is fully open source. Read the code or fork it on GitHub.
Independently audited
Audited encryption.
Grid uses the Matrix protocol for end-to-end encryption. The same protocol has been independently reviewed by the firms below.
Who uses Grid
Not just for families.
Families use Grid. So do hiking groups, moto crews, and work teams who want to know where their people are without handing it to a tracking company.

Grid vs Life360
Why Grid, not Life360.
Both apps let you share your location with people you trust. Grid just doesn't make money off it.
No phone number or email required
Never sells your location data
Works on GrapheneOS / de-Googled Android
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Grid.
Your location is encrypted on your phone before it’s sent, using the Matrix protocol. Only the people you’ve shared with can decrypt it. We can’t read it on our servers.
Matrix is an open protocol for end-to-end encrypted messaging. It’s the same protocol Element uses for secure chat, and it’s been independently audited several times. Building on Matrix means we don’t have to roll our own encryption.
Grid uses Protomaps, an open-source map renderer. We serve the tiles from our own infrastructure on Cloudflare, so Google and Apple never see where you’re looking around the map.
Yes. Grid runs on GrapheneOS and other de-Googled Android devices with no Google Play Services. We wrote our own open-source location plugin, libre_location, that gets GPS directly from the OS. No sandboxed Play Services or workarounds needed.
Just a passkey and a username. New accounts sign up with a passkey, no phone number or email needed. Older accounts that signed up with SMS verification still work, but we’re phasing that out.
Yes. Grid runs on Matrix, so you can point the app at your own homeserver. The mobile app is open source on GitHub. Hop in our Discord if you want help getting set up.
Yes. The core features (encrypted location sharing, unlimited groups, end-to-end encryption) are free. There’s an optional satellite maps add-on for $4.99/month if you want satellite imagery, which helps pay for development. Nothing else is paywalled.
