In all of the discussion about AB5, it seems underreported that a significant majority of the tech platform workers seem to prefer the contractor model. Below survey done by former driver. (therideshareguy.com/california-sue….) Different company found 80% majority prefer contractor status.
(If anyone knows of more comprehensive surveys with public results, please let me know.)
Broader Bureau of Labor Statistics survey: “Independent contractors overwhelmingly favored their alternative employment arrangement (79 percent) to a traditional one (9 percent) in May 2017.”
I asked someone who knows about CA state politics, and the source of AB5 was the Teamsters, who wanted to capture Uber's drivers and couldn't do so unless they were employees.
