This month's headlines

MediaWiki 1.46 released in June 30, 2026. Extension testing is ongoing, with NextTide forthcoming once sufficient extensions are tested. Please reach out to the Technology Team if you'd like to help out.

What's happening

Tech updates

  • Extension testing for MediaWiki 1.46 is being conducted with Parsoid enabled by default. This is done in anticipation to the WMF's plans to switch to Parsoid by MediaWiki 1.47, though it may be delayed again like previous attempts. The majority of extensions tested so far work as intended under Parsoid, with a few known cases of malfunctioning extensions.
  • Newly created wikis will no longer have Skin:Modern and Skin:CologneBlue enabled by default.
  • The Chameleon skin was undeployed due to incompatibilities with MediaWiki 1.46. See T14172 for details.
  • $wgNativeImageLazyLoading is enabled for all wikis that did not change the setting.
  • $wgRestrictDisplayTitle is disabled for all wikis that did not change the setting.
  • $wgArticleCountMethod is changed from link to any for all wikis that did not change the setting.
  • $wgTabberNeueEnableAnimation is disabled for all wikis that did not change the setting.
  • $wgVectorResponsive is set to true for all new wikis. Existing wikis are unaffected.

Wiki highlights

  • The official Item Asylum Wiki was created on May 1, 2024 and officially migrated from Fandom in early 2025. The wiki is being endorsed and supported by the developers of Item Asylum, and for the last 2 years, has been documenting everything about the game in a comprehensive manner with the help of powerful templates and the community of the game.

Mirahezean of the month

This month, PB2008, a Global Patroller, is our Mirahezean of the Month.

I first joined Wikipedia in January 2020, during the COVID pandemic. With schools closed and online lessons dragging on, I felt bored at home and decided to create a Wikipedia account just to pass the time. That’s how I started editing — at first casually, but soon I got more interested. Over time, I learned about templates, policies, and editing tools, and began contributing more seriously.

By 2023, I wanted to try something more technical. In June that year, I discovered Miraheze through Public Test Wiki, where I could play around with admin tools and test different configurations without worrying about breaking anything important. Later in August, I joined Unbooks (偽基文庫), a satirical wiki, since I had parody ideas I wanted to share. I really enjoyed the creative freedom there, and by December 2023 the community trusted me enough to become a local administrator. That gave me confidence and made me feel like I was truly part of the Miraheze community.

Between 2024 and 2025, I shifted more toward counter‑vandalism than content editing. I noticed that in my timezone (HKT), there weren’t many global volunteers online, so wikis were more vulnerable during the day. I wanted to help fill that gap and keep Miraheze safe even when most of the team was offline. I spent more time monitoring recent changes, reporting issues, and learning how global tools worked. In February 2026, Steward Raidarr nominated me to become a Global Patroller. That recognition made me proud and motivated me to keep improving my skills and supporting the platform.

Miraheze is great because it’s open and flexible, but it relies on volunteers to stay safe. If you’re new, don’t be afraid to explore different wikis, test tools, or report problems — even small actions make a difference. I’m thankful to Raidarr for nominating me as a Global Patroller, and grateful for the trust the community has given me. It’s an honor to be part of CVT and to help keep Miraheze strong, and I hope more people will join in to make the platform even better.

Monthly stats

Compared to the previous month:

  • Number of wikis: 25311 (+636)
  • Number of active wikis: 12664 (+194)
  • Wiki requests: 2206 (+24)

Tech tip of the month

  • The TemplateSandbox extension allows template and module editors to preview the effects of their edit on another page. This extension works for pages in MediaWiki namespace as well, such as MediaWiki:Common.css, MediaWiki:Common.js, and gadget definitions. To enable the TemplateSandbox preview button, modify the MediaWiki namespace in Special:ManageWiki/namespaces and enable $wgTemplateSandboxEditNamespaces for it.
