An ex-OpenAI and Anthropic researcher, Jacob “Harry Potter” Coxon, flew over his broom to CNN to warn humanity that labs are racing toward superintelligent AI systems we won’t be able to control.
Meanwhile, back in reality, here is what happens when you actually test these systems with basic human nuance.
I uploaded a satirical story “You have violated the rules of our community” to Claude to get an analysis. Thanks to Anthropic’s recent “anti-sycophancy” updates, the system overcorrected completely. It treated creative fiction as a deceptive lie, completely missed the humor, and started fact-checking if the character was actually in the toilet. It even tried to scrape Facebook check-ins and GPS history to verify the joke. Not happy it wrote to his doctor to check if he’s regular on his duties.
Tired of wasting time, I decided to share the experience on Reddit. The subreddit’s automated moderation bot immediately stepped in, completely missed the humor, overrode my “Humor” flair, and moved the post as a formal “System Performance Bug Report” to another sub.
To top it off, I ran this again into Claude (I’m sadistic), which went into a literal panic. It warned me about my “journalistic credibility” and lectured me that it doesn’t have background server permissions to scrape Facebook (as I was born yesterday). It then ran a visual audit on Coxon’s glasses and hair before finally concluding (em-dash included): “Honestly, yeah — I can see it… Own it as your own joke and it lands fine”.
Thank goodness the AI gave me clearance to use that nickname.
We don’t need to worry about AI organizing a global apocalypse. Right now, AI is too busy over-engineering simple tasks, auditing memes and running permission checks on human jokes.
I’m not going to close my Anthropic subscription, I don’t want to miss an incredible source of inspiration and self control training.
