How to build a fashion e-commerce marketplace

In this post, I will cover some of the technical challenges (around data and integrations) that we faced in building Miner, one of the first digital malls.

It all starts with vision

In 2015, I was the Co-Founder and CTO of Miner — a fashion marketplace featuring top retailers and brands. We started with a vision — a better digital marketplace, specifically “the best way to buy clothes”. A store that featured merchandise from the most popular online stores, with well designed and informative product pages, high quality product photos, and a search engine that surpassed customer expectations.

We imagined editor curated collections and recommendation-based outfit bundling based on colors, styles, and seasons. We envisioned a checkout system that did not suck — a universal cart that allowed us to forward orders to retailers, yet provide a friendly user experience. We wanted to provide accurate inventory information, to reduce customer disappointment when they couldn’t find their color or size.
