It’s Natural Language Programming, Not “Vibe Coding”

It’s a peculiar thing, isn’t it? The way a single phrase can encapsulate an entire technological shift while simultaneously demeaning it. I recently saw a viral image, a meme really, where Bill Gates asks what “VIBE” in “Vibe Coding” stands for, and Linus Torvalds replies: “Very Inefficient But Entertaining.” It’s an amusing quip, yet it perfectly embodies the trivializing and frankly, derogatory, sentiment some hold towards the most significant evolution in programming since its inception. To call this new paradigm “vibe coding” is to fundamentally misunderstand and disparage the very real and powerful practice of Natural Language Programming, and it’s time we call it by its proper name.

For generations, there has been a profound disconnect between human thought and machine execution. We think in rich, contextual natural language, while machines operate on a binary, low-level scale. Programming languages were a brilliant attempt to bridge this chasm, but they remain an abstraction: a syntax-heavy, abstract medium that is not intuitive for everyone and still requires significant effort and mental translation. A rational programmer would never want to leave high-level programming to write in a low-level language, even if they knew how. How many zeros and ones could they write before they start making mistakes? It is simply not efficient. Now, however, the advent of AI has brought a paradigm shift, enabling users to program by communicating their intent in plain, natural language and getting executable code in return. This is not a mystical, low-effort “vibe”; it is the natural culmination of decades of computer science research, and it is a powerful tool for efficiency. The irony is that many of the same people who dismiss this new workflow as “inefficient” are the ones who spend hours on forums like Stack Overflow (with the exception of greats like Linus Trovalds), painstakingly searching for code snippets to copy, paste, and then attempt to integrate. With Natural Language Programming, we cut out the hassle and delay, getting immediate, context-aware assistance that is far more efficient.

Nothing is beyond evolution, and it is programming’s turn to evolve and it’s happening right before our eyes. This new reality is not a threat to the craft, but a liberation from its most tedious parts. I am reminded of the early days of the automobile, when the horse and carriage industry was vocal in its criticism, arguing against the very technology that would make transport faster and more accessible for all. I believe we are seeing the same resistance today. This opposition stems from a place of being threatened, a fear that established expertise is being devalued. But while some are busy criticizing from the sidelines, others are already utilizing Natural Language Programming to save immense amounts of time, effort, and cost, pushing the boundaries of what is possible. The future belongs to those who embrace this change, not those who cling to outdated methods.

For the sake of clarity, professional legitimacy, and respecting the intellectual effort behind this breakthrough, we must reject the term “vibe coding” and embrace the proper one. Natural Language Programming is a precise, descriptive name that acknowledges the underlying technology (Natural Language Processing) and the deliberate, strategic nature of the process. It is about using our most human ability, language to directly instruct machines, and it is the single most important development in democratizing code creation and accelerating innovation. The future of programming is conversational and it is no longer abstract. It’s not about vibes; it’s about a new, powerful, and very real form of programming.
