Yet if you watch what experienced engineers actually do day-to-day, you’ll notice something curious: they’re hitting tab. A lot.

While coding agents dominate conference talks and Twitter threads, autocomplete — that humble inline suggestion appearing as you type — has become the quiet workhorse of AI-assisted development. This isn’t a case of senior developers being stuck in their ways or resistant to change. The data backs up the behavior: GitHub’s developer survey found that 88% of Copilot users primarily interact with inline suggestions, while only 37% regularly use the chat interface for code generation.
