In the summer of 1974, a young grandmaster named George Koltanowski sat down in a hotel ballroom in San Francisco to do something that most chess theorists considered not merely difficult, but structurally insane.
Koltanowski was attempting to play four games of blindfolded chess simultaneously, while simultaneously conducting a game of mental checkers, while also reciting a list of fifty random objects given to him by the audience — in reverse order.
If you analyze the cognitive load of what Koltanowski was doing, it shouldn’t work. The human prefrontal cortex is simply not equipped to process five distinct spatial matrices while running a reverse verbal stack. When neuroscientists later studied memory champions attempting similar feats, they discovered something startling: the moment a player tried to think — the moment they paused to analyze the deep branching logic of move four or calculate a six-step knight sacrifice — the entire architecture collapsed.
Koltanowski didn’t succeed by thinking harder. He succeeded by turning his brain completely off. He called it “the drift.” Modern internet culture, with its uncanny knack for crude yet profound nomenclature, has given this strategy a somewhat less polite name.
They call it retardmaxxing.
But because we are attempting to understand this not just as a meme, but as a genuine competitive advantage, let’s give it a little breathing room. Let’s call it retard maxxing.
The Centipede’s Dilemma
To understand why “retard maxxing” — the deliberate suspension of high-order analytical friction in favor of radical, unfiltered execution — is becoming the dominant operational mode of the twenty-first century, we first have to talk about a 19th-century poem about a bug.
In 1871, the British researcher Katherine Craster published a short rhyme about a centipede who was asked by a toad how it managed to walk with so many legs:
The centipede was happy quite,
Until a toad in fun
Said, “Pray, which leg goes after which?”
This raised her doubts to such a pitch,
She lay distracted in a ditch
Considering how to run.
Psychologists call this hyper-reflection. In sports, it’s the yips. In business, it’s analysis paralysis. In executive leadership, it’s the tragedy of the Harvard MBA who spends eight months constructing a 140-slide deck explaining why a product cannot be built, while a nineteen-year-old in a sweat-stained hoodie in Austin writes a clunky script over a weekend, ships it to 50,000 users, and accidentally creates a $20 million company.
For the last century, our elite institutions have operated on a fundamental assumption:
Information + Analysis = Superior Decision Making.
We believed that the person with the most sophisticated model, the most nuanced understanding of market dynamics, and the deepest grasp of edge cases would inevitably win.
Except that’s not what happens. In environment after environment characterized by high volatility and rapid feedback loops, the person running the complex mental simulation loses to the person who simply refuses to simulate at all.
The General Who Forgot to be Scared
Consider the battle of Fort Donelson in February 1862.
The Union army was led by a quiet, unglamorous brigadier general named Ulysses S. Grant. His Confederate counterpart, General Gideon Pillow, was an attorney — a man of immense intellect, elaborate tactical theories, and sophisticated legal training. Pillow looked at the maps, calculated the supply lines, analyzed the risk vectors, and concluded that Fort Donelson was in an unassailable position.
Grant, by contrast, possessed a quality that his contemporaries often mistook for stupidity: he had an almost complete inability to imagine defeat. While his staff debated the complex troop rotations of the Confederate front, Grant looked at the frozen mud, chewed on his cigar, and issued a demand that was laughably crude by 19th-century military doctrine: Unconditional and immediate surrender.
Pillow was so paralyzed by his own multi-variable strategic assessment that he fled the fort, leaving his army behind. Grant took 15,000 prisoners without ever drawing up a formal battle plan.
When Lincoln was later urged to fire Grant because he lacked tactical finesse, Lincoln’s response was legendary: “I cannot spare this man. He fights.”
What Lincoln recognized was that Grant was practitioner zero of tactical un-thinking. In a chaos environment, Grant didn’t calculate three moves ahead because calculating three moves ahead invited doubt, hesitation, and paralysis. He moved directly to the target with the blind, unyielding momentum of a bowling ball thrown down a hallway.
The Architecture of Strategic Ignorance
So why does “retard maxxing” work so unreasonably well?
Neuroscience offers a compelling answer through what is known as System 1 vs. System 2 processing, made famous by Daniel Kahneman. System 2 is slow, analytical, conscious, and computationally expensive. System 1 is fast, intuitive, automatic, and crude.
In low-velocity, stable environments — like playing classical chess or auditing an oil company — System 2 reigns supreme. But in complex, high-velocity environments, System 2 suffers from a fatal flaw: cognitive friction.
Every time you stop to ask:
- What if this fails?
- What will people think of me?
- Is this fully optimized?
- Have I considered the dynamic market edge cases?
…you introduce a tax on momentum.
High Analysis → Cognitive Friction→ Hesitation→ Market Failure
Naive Execution → Zero Friction→ Rapid Loop → Market Dominance
The “retard maxxer” sidesteps this tax entirely. By deliberately lowering their analytical threshold — by embracing a state of tactical stupidity — they achieve three massive structural advantages:
- Velocity Over Accuracy: They compress the feedback loop. While the genius is tuning the instrument, the idiot has already played five bad notes, learned three lessons, and started the second verse.
- Immunity to Ego Losses: High intelligence breeds high fragility. If you pride yourself on being clever, failure is an existential threat to your identity. If you accept being a simpleton who just hammers at the nail, failure is just noise.
- Unpredictability: Sophisticated actors model other sophisticated actors. They expect rational, calculated moves. They are entirely unprepared for someone who ignores game theory, walks straight through the minefield, and somehow makes it to the other side because they didn’t know the mines were there.
The $100 Billion Muscle Mindset
Look around today’s economic landscape, and you’ll see that the most disruptive forces are rarely the most intellectual ones.
Take the early days of social media, or the current gold rush in artificial intelligence. The founders winning aren’t the ones writing 80-page whitepapers on ethics and macro-structure. They are the ones slapping crude user interfaces onto massive language models, ignoring copyright law, pressing “deploy,” and dealing with the wreckage later.
It is uncomfortable to admit, but modern culture is being reshaped not by the smartest person in the room, but by the person least hindered by their own intellect.
Does this mean intelligence is dead? Of course not. You still want System 2 when building the bridge, designing the pacemaker, or calculating the orbital trajectory of the James Webb Space Telescope.
But when it comes to navigating the murky, chaotic, fog-of-war reality of human ambition, our culture has spent fifty years over-rewarding the overthinkers and under-estimating the power of the brute force run.
The next time you find yourself stuck at a crossroad — paralyzed by options, drafting pros-and-cons lists, lost in the intricate machinery of your own mind — it might be worth remembering the lesson of George Koltanowski, General Grant, and the poor, frozen centipede in the ditch.
Sometimes, the smartest thing you can possibly do is to stop being so damn clever.
