Kraftwerk 0.1 - Pocket Calculator - Played on Arduino

2 min read Original article ↗

Dear purists - this is not for you... OK!

For everyone else - this is my interpretation of Kraftwerk's 'Pocket Calculator', performed with 5 Arduinos, an original Stylophone, and a Korg Monotron-Duo. I only used the latter because a Casio FX-501P calculator didn't come up on ebay.

tl;dir I wrote some software that let me play all 4 parts of this Kraftwerk song by myself.

Full version:

  • I built a looping sequencer for the Arduino, and installed it onto 4 devices...
  • I turned one Arduino into a sampler, so I could play back drum sounds...
  • And turned the other three into Mozzi soft synths, with various patches.
  • Then I sync'd all four to a master control Arduino via I2C, which handled the MIDI input, and pattern sequencing.
  • I then got a mixer (which I built back in the early 80s) out of a box, and connected it together...
  • ...before filming it several times, in an attempt to make it look less naff than the first take!

TBH, it probably wasn't worth the effort - but I've had to suffer for my art... now it's your turn!

Have a listen...
