How Studio works

Tell it once, it keeps building from there.

Here's what Studio by Spotify Labs can access, what it does automatically, what it asks you first, and what it remembers.

Skills

Things you can do with Studio

Skills are capabilities Studio uses behind the scenes. Just ask, and it figures out what to use. Some are always available, while others appear when you connect an account.

Music & playback

"Play something upbeat in the kitchen"

Controls Spotify playback, creates playlists, searches the catalogue, and more.

Podcast creation

"Make me a 10-minute episode about what happened in music this week"

Generates Personal Podcasts from your Spotify data, connected accounts, and the web.

Calendar & email

"What's on today? Include anything urgent in my inbox."

With your permission, Studio reads your calendar and inbox to pull relevant context into audio.

Scheduled tasks

"Every Friday at 5pm, make me a playlist of this week's new releases I'd like"

Runs tasks on a schedule you set: weekly playlists, morning audio, artist monitoring. Runs in the background.

Writing assistance

"Draft a thank-you email to the team"

Drafts emails and documents for you.

Daily briefs

"Give me a 10-minute briefing about my daily meetings and unread emails."

Creates a personal podcast to help you prepare for your day using your calendar, inbox, tasks, interests, and Spotify activity.

Web research

"What's happened in music tech this week? Give me a quick summary."

Browses the web using a separate browser profile to find information and review articles, or current news.

Deep dive

"Make me an episode on the history of UK post-punk. Use my highlights too."

Generates an episode on any topic, researched from your notes, highlights, or the web.

Travel planning

"Make me an audio guide for my Tokyo trip next month."

With your permission, Studio reads your email bookings, saved Maps lists, and notes — and assembles an audio guide for your trip.

Artist alerts

"Let me know when Aldous Harding announces UK dates."

Keeps an eye on artists, releases, and tour dates. Surfaces what's relevant based on your listening history.

Music discovery

"Find me something like Grouper but more uptempo."

Searches and recommends music based on your taste profile and what you're asking for.

Notes & files

"Pull my notes from last week's meeting and draft a follow-up."

With your permission, Studio reads files you point it to — notes, documents, highlights — and helps you act on them.

Connected accounts

What Studio has access to

You're in control. Here's what information it can use and what it can't access.

Spotify

Your listening history, followed artists, saved content, playlists, and playback devices.

Calendar

With your permission, Studio can read your calendar to create more relevant experiences, including Personal Podcasts tailored to your day.

Email

Ask Studio to scan your inbox, highlight what's important, and draft replies.

Web

Studio browses using a separate browser profile to research topics and gather news. It's designed to read, not post, comment or take actions on websites.

Local files

Studio can access files you point it to, but it's blocked from sensitive locations by default, including saved passwords, security keys, and system files.

What Studio asks first

Studio knows when to act and when to check.

Studio is built for Spotify. It can make changes to your Spotify experience when you choose.

Green status

It acts immediately

Playback, playlists, search, information retrieval, audio creation, web browsing, and scheduled tasks.

Amber status

Requires your permission

Sending emails, creating calendar events, and posting to social media.

Red status

Not designed for

Financial transactions, medical or legal advice, or actions that bypass security controls.

Memory

What Studio remembers, and how to control it

It learns things that help it work better over time. You can see everything it has stored and delete any of it at any time.

What it stores

Your listening patterns and taste preferences. Things you've asked it to remember. Your timezone and routine. Any customisation you've made to how it sounds and behaves.

Your Spotify data

Your listening history is refreshed daily from Spotify. It re-reads it each session rather than storing a permanent copy.

Your control

Ask "what do you know about me?" and it shows you everything. You can ask to delete individual items or clear everything.

Your controls

What you can see and change at any time

Permissions

See and revoke connected accounts, folder access, and tool permissions.

Stop

Stops supported actions while they're running.

Reset

Clears all Studio-managed local data and starts fresh. Spotify-hosted content stays on Spotify unless you delete it there.
