Technology should
work for you.
Your life does not belong to tech companies. Your conversations, your memories, your attention. They shouldn't be the price of admission.
Weβre building Micro: an open personal assistant for everyday life. A place to ask questions, make sense of things and get something done. Something useful that lets you get on with your day.
Help without the hooks.
Our commitment is simple: no advertising, no selling your attention, no designing for addiction. An assistant should help you spend less time dealing with technology.
An alternative you can be part of.
You shouldn't have to become a system administrator to have an alternative. Use Micro online. Tell us what helps and what gets in your way. Share the idea. You don't need to write code or run a server to help shape it.
You shouldn't have to leave every familiar app at once, either. A useful assistant can be a place to start: one part of everyday life with more choice over the technology behind it.
Public infrastructure for everyday life.
We want personal assistance to become useful infrastructure: something people can access, understand and help improve. Built for public benefit, with room for other people and organisations to operate it too.
Open source is one foundation. The people who use it matter just as much. What we build should be shaped by the lives it is meant to help.
Open means you have a choice.
Start with our hosted service; we take care of running it. The code is available to inspect, change and run independently. You or someone you trust can run your own instance and choose its models.
Independence is something we build.
Micro still relies on external providers for some capabilities. Those dependencies should be visible, replaceable and under your control. Making them clearer, and making it easier to take your information to another instance, are work still ahead of us.
Make room for life.
The goal is to make everyday life a little simpler. A useful answer. One small action. Something you no longer have to keep in your head.
Help shape Micro.
Start by using it. Tell us what you need, suggest an improvement, or share this manifesto with someone who wants an alternative. Your experience matters, whether or not you are technical.
