Group Chats in ChatGPT | OpenAI Help Center

If you’re in a supported region and don’t see this feature, try restarting the app and make sure you’re using the latest version of the ChatGPT app on Android iOS.

Groups chats are available to ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users.

Group chats let you bring people — and ChatGPT — into the same conversation. You can plan, make decisions, and collaborate together while ChatGPT helps search, summarize, generate content, and keep everyone on the same page.

Use group chats to:

  • Plan events (trips, dinners, game nights) with friends or family

  • Collaborate on projects (home design, studying, research, work docs)

  • Share links, notes, files, and images so everyone — including ChatGPT — has the same context

  • Make decisions together (compare options, create pro/con lists, settle debates)

Group chats are separate from your individual conversations, and your personal ChatGPT memory is not shared with anyone in the chat.

  • ChatGPT is a participant in the conversation and does not respond to every message. It follows the flow of the conversation and decides when to respond and when to stay quiet based on the context of the group conversation. You can always mention “ChatGPT” in a message when you want it to respond.

  • Your account-level memory and custom instructions are not shared in group chats.

  • You can set group-specific custom instructions so ChatGPT behaves in a way that fits that group.

Create a group chat

Start a new group chat

  1. Open the ChatGPT app (Web, iOS, or Android).

  2. Tap the people icon in the top‑right of a new chat to start a new group chat.

  3. Tap Start group chat. You’ll land in a new chat where you can add others by sharing an invite link.

Turn an existing chat into a group

  1. Open the conversation.

  2. Tap the people icon in the top‑right of a new chat to start a new group chat.

  3. Tap Start group chat. You’ll land in a copy of the chat where you can add others by sharing an invite link.

Adding people to an existing chat creates a copy of the original conversation as a new group chat. Your original conversation stays separate and can be found under Your chats.

Where to find your group chats

Group chats appear in the new Group chats section of the sidebar so you can quickly:

  • Reopen recent groups

  • See who’s in each group

  • Manage settings and notifications

Invite people to a group chat

Share an invite link

People can only join a group chat through an invite link.

There are several ways to find the link:

  • On Web

    • Highlight the chat on the sidebar, click on ⋯, and select Add people via group link.

    • In the group chat, click on the chat name at the top of the page and select Add people from the dropdown. New conversations will also have a visible Invite with link button where you can find the invite link.

  • On iOS/Android

    • Tap on the people icon on the top-right of a group chat and select Add people in the pop-up menu.

You can have between one to twenty people in a group chat. Anyone in the group can share the link to bring others in.

In the group link modal, you can select ⋯ for the following

  • Reset link: Generates a new link and immediately invalidates the previous invite link.

  • Delete link: Turns off joining by link until you create a new one, and immediately invalidates the previous invite link.

Please note: Anyone with the link may be able to join and see the entire conversation. We recommend resetting the link if it’s shared more widely than intended.

How ChatGPT participates

When it responds

In a group chat, ChatGPT follows the flow of the conversation and decides when to respond and when to stay quiet. You can always get its input by mentioning “ChatGPT”.

  • Automatic responses (default):

    • ChatGPT decides when to respond based on the flow of conversation.

    • It generally replies when someone clearly asks a question or requests help.

    • You can always get its input by mentioning “ChatGPT”.

  • Mention-only mode:

    • You can turn off automatic responses in the group’s settings.

    • In this mode, ChatGPT responds only when someone mentions @ChatGPT.

  • It does not respond to every message.

    • If the conversation is between humans and doesn’t need its help, it stays quiet.

We’ve also given ChatGPT the ability to react to messages with emojis, and reference profile photos - so it can, for example, use group members’ photos when asked to create fun personalized images.

Model and features

In group chats, ChatGPT:

  • Responses are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which chooses the best model to respond with based on the prompt and the models available to the user that ChatGPT is responding to based on their Free, Plus, Go, or Pro plan.

  • Supports:

    • Search

    • Image creation

    • Image uploads and vision

    • File upload and retrieval (e.g., docs, PDFs)

    • Dictation / voice input (using your device’s microphone)

Features not currently available at launch in group chats include:

  • Canvas

  • Voice mode / full voice conversations

  • Python / Data Analysis

  • Deep Research

  • Tasks and Apps

  • Agent mode

  • Account-level memory and custom instructions

These features remain available in other parts of ChatGPT (depending on your plan) but are not yet supported in group chats.

What ChatGPT can see

Within a group chat, ChatGPT only has access to:

  • Messages sent in that group

  • Files and images shared in that group

  • Participants’ names and profile photos

  • Custom instructions from the group chat’s settings

It does not see:

  • Your individual 1:1 chats

  • Your personal memory

  • Your account-level custom instructions

Manage the group

You can access group chat management settings:

On Web: In the group chat, select the group chat name at the top of the page.

On iOS/Android: In the group chat, select the pencil icon on the top-right of the screen.

Custom Instructions

Select Customize ChatGPT to access your group chat’s custom instructions. You can set custom instructions for each group chat so ChatGPT responds in a way that fits that specific group. Add guidance such as:

  • Personality and tone (“keep responses concise and professional”)

  • Group goals (“help us plan our weekly study group”)

  • Preferences (“summarize long links before responding”)

These instructions apply only to that group chat and don’t modify your personal account settings or memory.

Group chat custom instructions are separate from custom instructions for your personal ChatGPT. Your personal ChatGPT memory is not used in group chats.

Rename the chat

You can tap the name, enter the new name, and save. A short system note lets everyone know it changed.

View members

Click or tap People to see the member list. You can select a person and choose Remove from group. Please note that the group creator cannot be removed.

Leave the group

Open the chat header and select Group info. Select Leave group chat, then confirm.

When you leave a group chat, you will lose access to that conversation and it will no longer be in the group chat section of your sidebar. You won’t receive messages or notifications from that chat anymore.

Limits

Group chats use the same core plan-based limits as ChatGPT, with some enhanced allowances when using Messages-style experiences (including group chats).

When ChatGPT responds in a group chat, the response counts toward the usage limit of the person whose message it’s responding to. Human-to-human messages do not count toward ChatGPT response limits.

“Chat responses” include up to a certain number of automatic replies when auto-response is enabled. When you reach your plan’s limit, ChatGPT may switch to a lighter experience until your window resets.

Safety and privacy

To help keep people safe, Group Chat uses a mix of proactive safety systems and user reporting. ChatGPT applies the same protections used in one-on-one chats, along with additional measures designed for group sharing and interactions. Images uploaded by users are screened to help prevent the sharing of illegal content, such as CSAM, and to restrict sexually explicit imagery when minors are present. URL links are also checked against trusted lists to help reduce exposure to unsafe sites. Users can report content or behavior directly in the product or through our webform, and we may review and take action in line with our usage policies. Learn more about our approach to transparency and content moderation.

Privacy Settings and Controls

  • Invite links are powerful. Anyone with the link may be able to join. Reset or delete the link if it’s shared beyond your intent. Share with those you trust. When a new participant is added to a group chat, they will be able to see the entire conversation history.

  • Files shared in a group are visible to all members (including ChatGPT). Remove sensitive content you no longer want to be visible.

  • Reporting: You can report violative conversations and remove people from a group.

  • Memory: Personal memory is automatically disabled once a chat contains more than one member. Group chats do not read or create personal memories.

  • Training: We do not train on group chat conversations if any user in a group chat has disabled the “Improve the model for everyone” setting in their data controls. Learn more about data controls in ChatGPT.

  • Deletion: You can delete your own messages in a group chat. When you delete one of your messages, it is removed for everyone in that chat. Other participants’ copies of your deleted message are also removed from the conversation view.

  • Data export: You can request an export of your data through ChatGPT’s data export feature in your account settings or through the privacy portal.

Teen Safety and Parental Controls

Parents or guardians can link their account with their teen’s to enable parental controls, and can turn off group chat entirely for the teen’s account.

When a minor joins a group chat, ChatGPT will default to an under 18 mode with additional content protections, reducing certain sensitive outputs to provide enhanced age-appropriate protections. These protections apply to all participants when interacting with ChatGPT with a minor present in the group chat. Learn more about Parental Controls.

FAQs

Can I start a group with just me and invite later?

Yes. You can create a group chat with just you and ChatGPT, then share the invite link whenever you’re ready to add others.

Does ChatGPT reply to every message in a group?

No. In group chats, ChatGPT:

  • Responds when mentioned (e.g. @ChatGPT),

  • Responds when you reply directly to one of its messages, or

  • Steps in when it’s clear the group is asking it for help (if auto-response is enabled).

It won’t reply to every message between human participants.

Are reactions and replies supported?

Yes. Group chats support emoji reactions and inline replies.

  • Long‑press or right‑click a message (depending on device) to react or reply.

  • ChatGPT can also react to messages with emojis.

What happens when a teen joins a group chat?

If a teen joins a group chat that previously had no teens:

  • ChatGPT enters an under‑18 mode with additional content protections on ChatGPT’s outputs.

  • These protections apply to everyone in the group when they interact with ChatGPT.

  • Because responses are governed by the chat’s mode rather than by the age of the individual who invokes ChatGPT, the model may respond to adult participants as if they were minors while under-18 mode is active.
