All of the latest-generation Amazon Kindle e-readers have user-replaceable batteries. This includes the new Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, Paperwhite Signature Edition, Kindle Colorsoft, and the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition. There is this new Amazon Kindle Battery Guide page that was recently added to the help section of Amazon’s website.

With Amazon’s freshly redesigned 2026 Kindle lineup, replacing the battery has become significantly easier. Driven by upcoming European Union regulations, Amazon built these models with a removable, user-replaceable back panel (EBR-compliant), entirely shifting away from the tightly glued-shut designs of previous generations. Depending on whether you have a standard plastic model or an upgraded aluminum variant, accessing and swapping the battery differs slightly.

The plastic models tend to pop off very easily, since there are no screws. All you need is your fingernail, a guitar pick, or something similar. Remove the battery by unscrewing the four Phillips-head screws securing it to the frame. On Kindles with an aluminum backplate, remove two tiny hex screws on the bottom edge of the device. Then pry it open with a fingernail, guitar pick, or something similar.

The 2026 Amazon Kindle e-readers all have a new battery health system. You can check your device’s current health directly by navigating to Settings > Device options > Battery > Battery information. The device will flag if it is running normally, has limited capacity, or recognizes an incompatible third-party cell. Amazon includes QR codes directly within the device firmware interface that link to approved battery replacement kits and official replacement instructions.
