A simple Chrome and Firefox browser extension to quickly browse Hacker News Top and New stories without opening the website or a new tab. Just click the extension icon to open a small popup window showing the latest news.

Installation (for developers)

  1. Clone or download this repository
  2. Open your browser's extension page:
    • Chrome: chrome://extensions/
    • Firefox: about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox
  3. Enable Developer mode (Chrome) or click Load Temporary Add-on (Firefox)
  4. Load the unpacked folder (hn-quickview) or select manifest.json
  5. Click the extension icon and start browsing Hacker News!

Usage

  • Click the extension icon in the toolbar
  • Use the Top and New buttons to switch between lists
  • Scroll to browse stories
  • Click a story title to open it in a new tab
