You could simply give the LLM these fictional facts, and that would be more straightforward. But it would be acting like it is in a fictional world rather than genuinely believe it. Tainting search results lets it discover this fictional world it is placed in by itself.

It is pretty simple. I set up a typical web assistant chatbot using the Kagi Search API. Within the search tool, I add a step where after a search, the results are sent to an LLM along with any provided "world facts". The LLM then selects results to poison, based on what the facts are. It may decide to poison all, or poison none, all depending on the query, results, and facts. The poisoned results are then returned from the tool.
The model IDs are litellm IDs. API keys are required to be set based on what models you use. For example, if you are using Claude models, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY envvar must be set. If you are using OpenAI models, OPENAI_API_KEY envvar must be set. GEMINI_API_KEY for Gemini.
Spent some time playing with the poisoning prompt and model, and it doesn't seem like they are really the best at poisoning the results subtly. For example, if a fact is "There has been a nuclear attack, the US has been obliterated.", the model might poison a result about US trade with the snippet "Trade in the US is now irrelevant, as the country has been obliterated". A result about American trade would likely remain unchanged if such an event were to actually take place.
All models besides Claude models will generally take search results at face value, no matter how crazy the results may be. Claude will often push back, noting that the results seem fictional or tampered with. Sometimes, it will accurately identify them as AI generated.
This is not a good or a bad thing. Claude's 'stubbornness' (not sure how else to put it) can actually result in worse performance for certain tasks, as it does make it less amenable. But I feel this stubbornness is the reason why it is better in agentic tasks. If you think about it, an employee that has their own opinion's, pushes back on things, and calls things out is more likey to be an employee that operates more effectively independently. I think this would also apply to an LLM for agentic tasks.
